Remember This Unique Instrument?

A few weeks ago we posted on social media about this charango, an instrument in the lute family, that was stolen from the victim’s car.

The charango’s owner had just started getting good at playing it when it was stolen. He brought it back from Argentina and it meant a lot to him. He didn’t think he would see it again.

Enter Officer Middlebrooks.

Thanks to his good investigative work on an unrelated drug case, he identified a possible suspect that led to the instrument’s location!

The victim was thrilled to get the update and wanted to thank Officer Middlebrooks personally. He also gave us permission to share this.

We’re glad we could help and love the sound of this super cool charango!

Man Arrested on Burglary, Invasion of Privacy, Sexual Exploitation and Stalking Charges

BOULDER, Colo. – After a monthslong investigation, Boulder Police detectives identified and charged a man with multiple crimes related to several peeping incidents in the city.

Detectives believe these crimes occurred between February 2024 and August 2026 at different locations in downtown Boulder. A recent tip helped detectives identify a possible suspect, and further investigation identified new photographic evidence and additional victims.

Several of the victims in this case were unaware the suspect had watched them, until they were contacted by police.

While searching the suspect’s electronics, police found suspected child po*******hy he appears to have downloaded from the internet. Though the suspect is a former Boulder Valley School District employee, detectives do not have any information at this time to indicate any of the victims were students. However, this investigation is ongoing and detectives are working closely with BVSD and the District Attorney’s Office and additional charges are possible.

The suspect, David A. Wise, 34, of Boulder, surrendered to the Boulder County jail this afternoon where he was booked on the below charges:
• 10 misdemeanor counts of invasion of privacy for sexual gratification,
• Two felony counts of stalking,
• One felony count of sexual exploitation of a child, and,
• One felony count of second-degree burglary.

Detectives do believe there could be additional victims and ask anyone with any information about this investigation to contact Detective J. Brown at [email protected] or 303-413-7330 regarding case 2604656.

As in every criminal case, these charges are an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.

Officers searched the area and spotted the suspect a half a block south. They swiftly took him into custody without injury.

The suspect was booked and released from the jail under current jail standards on charges of second-degree trespassing and felony criminal mischief.

We’ve identified five victims so far but believe there could be more. If you think your property was damaged, please contact Officer J. Cook at [email protected] regarding case 26-09266.

The city’s Dispatch center is rolling out some new technology to enhance its public safety response to the community.

Starting this month, Boulder Police and Fire Communications Center will begin using AI technology during limited hours and days of the week to answer non-emergency calls. The purpose is to provide faster and more efficient responses to those calls, which will allow dispatchers to handle higher priority calls more quickly.

This technology will not be used to answer 911 calls and there are several safeguards in place to immediately
transfer calls that become an emergency.

“Our dedicated dispatchers regularly handle a variety of emergency and non-emergency calls 24/7/365 from the community while simultaneously notifying, activating and dispatching resources for our officers, fire and ems, rangers and other city employees,” Police Chief Steve Redfearn said. “This option will allow us to better serve everyone by giving them more time to focus on calls involving more serious threats of harm and violence to our community. This will also still allow us to provide professional service to callers for lower-level priority calls that are important but can be handled by this technology.”

Dispatch Manager Brad Riggin explained that the technology will eventually replace the center’s current traditional phone menu, which requires callers to listen to a list of options then make choices.

“This technology is designed to sound like a natural conversation while it determines the caller’s needs and quickly addresses their request,” Riggin said. “It will not be used to answer any 911 calls and if the technology detects concerns it will immediately transfer the call to a dispatcher.”

Examples of types of non-emergency calls could include:
• Abandoned vehicles
• Traffic crashes with no injuries
• Animal complaints with no threat to public safety
• Cold assaults where the suspect is no longer on scene
• General assists
• Cold burglaries where the suspect is no longer on scene
• Extra patrol requests
• Firework complaints
• Found Property
• Lost property
• Noise complaints
• Parking complaints
• Request for follow up from officers
• Traffic complaints

The goal is to test this new technology in phases throughout the month during certain periods of time and days of the week with a full implementation by the end of November. You can learn more about it on our website:

Several Stolen Bikes Recovered; Arrests Made Thanks to Good Police Work

BOULDER, Colo. – The Boulder Police Department has arrested three people and recovered nearly a dozen high end bikes and scooters thanks to good investigative work.

Detectives are now asking the public if any of the recovered wheels pictured here belong to you. The recovered bikes can be viewed on our website: https://bouldercolorado.gov/news/several-stolen-bikes-recovered-arrests-made-after-search-warrant

If you think one of these items belong to you, please contact BPD Property and Evidence at 303-441-3340. You will be required to prove ownership.

This investigation began Sept. 20 when Patrol Officers Rosas and Mastriona responded to investigate a break in at a bike storage area of an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Goss Street. Their keen eyes spotted evidence nearby and further good police work helped them identify the suspects, one of whom they knew from a previous case involving a stolen motorbike.

They worked with detectives and obtained a search warrant for one of the suspect’s homes where they found what looked to be a chop shop strewn with bikes, frames, burglary tools and other bicycle parts, all suspected to be stolen. Officers have since recovered several other bikes that are also believed to be stolen.

That day they arrested Jonathan P. Hayes, 37, and Christopher L. Hughes, 39, and last night they arrested Elijah M. Rowland, 19, after our Drone as First Responder spotted him stealing a bait bike in the 1000 block of Arapahoe Avenue.

Hayes has been charged with possession of burglary tools, second-degree burglary, theft and criminal mischief.

Hughes has been charged with second-degree burglary, theft, criminal mischief and possession of burglary tools.

Rowland has been charged with second-degree burglary, theft, criminal mischief and possession of burglary tools. Last night he was also charged with theft, obstructing a peace officer, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, carrying a concealed knife and criminal possession of a financial transaction device.

“We know our community relies on a variety of different means to travel through Boulder, and we won’t tolerate individuals victimizing our residents,” Police Chief Steve Redfearn said. “I’m incredibly proud of the good police work done by our officers from Patrol to Investigations to identity the suspects and hold them accountable.”

The Boulder Police Department recovers stolen bikes almost daily, but we’re unable to return them to their owners if they are not reported stolen or registered in Bike Index. Please protect your bike by locking it with multiple U-Locks, registering your bike’s serial number and taking pictures of it to prove ownership.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact Detective E. Quayle at [email protected] or 720-564-2078 regarding case 2608580.

As in every criminal case, these charges are an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.
