SPAN is a human rights organization committed to ending violence against adults, youth, and children through support, advocacy, education and community organizing. SPAN began providing services in 1979 and is crucial to the network of support that offers critical “safety net” services to vulnerable, low-income and at-risk populations. It is the only organization serving Boulder, western Broomfield, smaller towns and unincorporated Boulder County designed to provide shelter and advocacy for victims of interpersonal violence at a time when our community is experiencing higher domestic violence rates than national and state averages.

💜 Getting to know your neighbors can start with a conversation.

Thank you to Boulder Housing Partners for hosting the annual BHP Block Party and welcoming SPAN to be part of the day!

Jamie and Harpiar from our counseling team enjoyed meeting residents, sharing resources, and helping more people learn about support available to survivors of violence.

We appreciate Boulder Housing Partners for creating space for residents and local organizations to connect.

If you or someone you know needs help, SPAN’s 24/7 Resource Hotline is available at 303-444-2424 for free, confidential support in English and Spanish.

💜 The power of being believed.

When Jessica called SPAN’s 24/7 Resource Hotline, one person listened and believed her. In that one moment, something changed. She found the support she needed to begin a path toward healing and hope.

One person. One moment. A difference that can last a lifetime.

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re reminded that how we respond matters. Listening without judgment, believing someone, and connecting them with support can make a difference in what happens next.

Long before he became a household name, Patrick Stewart learned a devastating lesson about silence and violence. An outspoken advocate for survivors of domestic violence, the renowned actor grew up in a home where his mother suffered frequent abuse from his father. He has called violence against women the "single greatest human rights violation of our generation."

This October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month -- and few have spoken about the issue more powerfully, or more personally, than Stewart. He has called on other men to speak out on violence against women, saying: "Violence against women is learned. Each of us must examine -- and change -- the ways in which our own behavior might contribute to, enable, ignore or excuse all such forms of violence. I promise to do so, and to invite other men and allies to do the same."

Stewart has also said he later learned that his father suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder from his combat service in World War II. After this discovery, he began to work with Combat Stress, an organization that helps combat veterans deal with their experiences in a healthy, non-abusive manner.

"The work that I do in campaigns about violence towards women, particularly domestic violence, is something that grew out of my own childhood experience," Stewart said in a speech where he talked about his work with organizations that support survivors of domestic violence, including the UK-based group Refuge.

"I do what I do in my mother's name, because I couldn't help her then. Now I can."

Today is . Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness, and the majority of victims and survivors identify “access to money” as a barrier to leaving an abuser.

No survivor should ever be forced to stay with an abusive partner just to keep a roof over their head. But every day across the country, local programs and shelters are forced to turn away thousands of survivors in need, because they simply don't have the money, space, or resources to help them all.

Whether we realize it or not, impacted by these challenges. We all deserve to live in safe, well-resourced communities, and victims and their children deserve to know that help will always be available if they need it.
