This morning's updated from National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) shows little change in the area of D1 in the tan shade ('Moderate Drought') affecting parts of the central and west. There was a small increase in the percentage of the state now considered to be 'abnormally dry' (D0) from last week (64%, up from 60%).

Rains from the remnants of Hurricane were just enough to keep most of the state from a one class degradation. This week's update does not take in rains that have fallen since Tuesday morning, however.

It's the middle of October AND the middle of meteorological , but these maps, especially for temperature and heat indices, look more like those from August! Humidity isn't much of a factor for most of the state, except in the west. That's where muggy dew point air in the lower 70s is combining with temperatures to send "feels like" readings into the upper 90s this afternoon!

🎇If you were up in the predawn hours, you might have seen a bright, glowing streak just above the eastern horizon. This came from the Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket, which was launched at 6:33am ET/5:33am CT at Cape Canaveral Space Station in Florida. Watch as the plume of exhaust fans outward from the rocket and becomes more illuminated as the sun shines on it just prior to daybreak!

This view comes courtesy of our Franklin County we**am, which faces SE. Keep your eye on the left-middle portion of the view for the rocket and its plume to appear in the opening seconds.

📣NEW: We would like to officially welcome Boyd County to the growing KY Mesonet family! Our newest site, located about 8 miles W of Catlettsburg and also just west of the county's most populous city (Ashland), is now online. It includes all standard weather-measuring instrumentation and sensors, along with a real-time we**am as well as soil probes that measure temperatures and moisture beneath the surface.

This is the first site to be added to our network in this area of NE KY in about 15 years!! It's also our third new site for 2026.

This station came about through a partnership with City of Ashland Kentucky Government along with Ashland - Boyd County - Catlettsburg Emergency Management. We thank them for their assistance in helping us find the most ideal location for the site build.

Weekend Recap: Rain and wind from the remnants of former Hurricane affected much of the state over the weekend. Many locations E of I-75 and S of I-64 received > 1". Black Mountain in Harlan County picked up over 2". A second band of significant rainfall also set up farther west, close to I-65, where many gauges also measured > 1". Amounts were lighter to the west, with Ballard County missing out on the rain altogether.

While the wind was not all that strong, several sites in the central region clocked gusts > 40 mph.

🌡🌧October is off to an unseasonably warm start, as made a late-season comeback. Many sites across the central and west saw readings soar into the low 90s Wednesday and again Thursday. However, a front is sliding into the Commonwealth this morning, providing the region with much-needed rainfall.

You can track the rainfall by overlaying the radar onto maps of several weather variables, including temperatures and precipitation, on our home page: https://www.kymesonet.org/
