Roland Wenk returned to the soccer field Thursday night for a moment he never expected to experience: honoring the coaches, referees and firefighter who helped save his life after he went into cardiac arrest during a game this summer.

On August 3rd, Bowmansville firefighters conducted an auto-extrication drill, working through two simulated vehicle entrapment scenarios using a variety of rescue techniques and equipment.

Proficiency with battery-powered, hydraulic, and hand-operated rescue tools is essential to performing a safe and timely extrication. Regular hands-on training helps our firefighters work efficiently when every minute matters, while maintaining the safety of both the patient and our crews.

During the drill, firefighters utilized AMKUS spreaders and cutters in conjunction with Paratech struts to stabilize the vehicles, create access, and remove obstacles around the simulated patients. Crews also practiced using hand and power tools, including windshield saws, Halligan bars, and reciprocating saws, to make more precise cuts and gain additional access.

Training like this gives our members an opportunity to practice different techniques, become more proficient with our equipment, and share knowledge and experience with one another.

A lot of knowledge was shared, skills were sharpened, and—as always—a little fun was had along the way.

Train together. Work together. Be ready when it matters.
