PRESS RELEASE – MECKLENBURG COUNTY, BOYDTON LIFE STATION ANNOUNCE TRANSITION AGREEMENT
Mecklenburg County and Boydton Life Station hereby announce that beginning on January 4, 2027, responsibility for emergency medical response and patient transport in central Mecklenburg County will transition from Boydton Life Station to Mecklenburg County Emergency Services. Boydton will continue to provide first response until the transition date.
The idea of a Boydton station was initiated by the Boydton Ruritan Club in 1983. Boydton Life Station was formed as an independent operation in late 1988 and launched 24/7/365 coverage on January 1, 1989. For several years prior, Boydton operated as a sub-station of the former Chase City Rescue Squad.
“I want to thank all members of Boydton Life Station, past and present, for the hard work and countless hours they have given over the years. I also want to thank the Boydton community for always supporting us. We could not have provided this service for all these years without the dedication of our members and the support of the people we served. I’m proud of what we have accomplished together and grateful to everyone who has been a part of it,” noted Boydton Life Station Captain John Toone, a key leader for Boydton for a significant period. Along with Treasurer Jean Dellinger, Toone presently manages day-to-day operations for Boydton.
The current Boydton Life Station building was built beginning in 2008. The building will transition to the County and will be the home of the County’s Boydton field operations.
“Over forty years, Boydton Life Station has been the centerpiece for emergency medical response, patient care, and the continuation of life in Mecklenburg County. Given its critical middle location, Boydton has augmented and backstopped our entire system. We are immensely indebted to the generations of Boydton Life Station providers that have assisted our families, friends, neighbors, and visitors in need. On every future call, we will carry forth the legacy established by Boydton Life Station and honor their tradition of impeccable care,” proclaimed Alex Gottschalk, Mecklenburg County Administrator.
"Boydton Life Station has been a staple of our county’s EMS system, answering calls in its own community and supporting agencies throughout Mecklenburg County. Many calls would have been delayed or gone unanswered without the dedication of their volunteers and providers. We are deeply appreciative for the time they have spent on duty, the sacrifices they have made, and the lives they have touched through their service. As we assume responsibility for this service area, we will build on that foundation and continue their commitment to serving this community and supporting emergency medical response throughout the County," stated Justin Burch, Mecklenburg’s Director of Emergency Services.
Mecklenburg County Emergency Services began medical provision and transport operations in 2023. Boydton will be the fourth service territory that will be served by County employed providers, joining Chase City / Northwest Mecklenburg, Clarksville / Kerr Lake, and Bracey / Lake Gaston.
