Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge was established on June 8, 1951. The refuge protects threatened and endangered species and migratory birds, maintains unique Everglades habitat, and provides compatible educational and recreational facilities. The refuge is open to the public from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm daily. The visitor center is open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm daily except for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Note: The visitor center is currently closed due to Covid.

WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY: Meet the Great Blue Heron! 🪶
Great Blue Herons can be found in a variety of habitats, ranging from freshwater to saltwater. They’re often seen patiently wading through shallow waters as they search for fish, frogs, and other small prey.

Great Blue Herons are impressive hunters! They can stand almost completely still while waiting for the perfect moment to strike, using their long, pointed beak to quickly grab their next meal.

Next time you see one standing perfectly still, remember they’re not posing for a photo; they’re probably just waiting for lunch!

WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY: Meet the North American River Otter! 🦦

Have you ever caught a glimpse of a river otter? These highly adaptable mammals are excellent swimmers who commonly live in freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, swamps, marshes, and canals. River otters build dens near these freshwater bodies, and can occasionally be seen swimming on the Refuge, so you otter keep your eyes peeled! 👀

North American river otters have long bodies that range from 2.5 to 5 feet long and can weigh 10 to 33 pounds. They even come equipped with their own built-in wetsuit! Their special fur has two layers, with the outer layer helping repel water and the inner layer helping keep them warm while swimming.

River otter activity can vary depending on food availability, weather, water temperature, and human activity. They can be both nocturnal, meaning they are active at night and crepuscular, active at dusk or dawn.

With all that time spent swimming, eating, and exploring, it’s safe to say river otters are always keeping themselves otter-ly busy! 🦦

Great job volunteers! Thanks to their help, 20 lbs of litter and trash was cleaned up from the Refuge making the environment safer and cleaner!

If you give a python a cookie.... It can grow up to an average 15 ft or more! Pictured below, one of our biologists lies down next to a 10 ft 5 in Burmese python skin.

What should you do if you spot a python? Take a picture if you can, mark your location a map, and call or report it to FWC. https://myfwc.com/conservation/value/fwcg/wildlife/nonnative/

We are now offering a free, asynchronous distance learning program for K-8 classes that brings real-world learning and our Refuge into the classroom. Through our new Video Postcards program, students develop their own questions and receive a personalized video postcard response from a Refuge Ranger, filmed on-site at Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge!

Whether you are diving into units from adaptations to ecosystems, or just looking for a way to increase student engagement and curiosity – our asynchronous distance learning program is flexible and adaptable to your needs.
