On Oct. 14, 2026, at 3:56 p.m., officers from the Bozeman Police Department responded to a business near W Main St. and Professional Dr. after it was reported that CPR was being performed on a woman who had possibly hit her head and fallen. Soon after their arrival, it was quickly determined that the woman had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was deceased.

Detectives were brought in and an investigation continued throughout the night. Based on items that connected the suspect to the scene, the investigation identified a man as the likely suspect.

At approximately 6:29 a.m., officers responded to a report of what appeared to be a deceased man in a field near the 2400 block of W College St, near where the suspected homicide had taken place. Soon after their arrival, officers determined the deceased male was the primary suspect in the homicide. The initial investigation at that scene indicated the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot.

At this point in the investigation, neither a motive nor the connection between the suspect and victim has been determined. There does not appear to be an ongoing threat to the community. The names of both the victim and the suspect will officially be released by the Gallatin County Coroner’s Office, pending proper notifications.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and coworkers of the victim in this senseless crime,” said Bozeman Police Chief Jim Veltkamp. “There is still more investigative work happening to better understand this event, but we’re grateful to have located the suspect.”

Multiple agencies responded to assist in the incident. Bozeman Police Department extended thanks to the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office, Coroners and Chaplains, Montana State University Police Department, Belgrade Police Department, Bozeman Fire Department, American Medical Response, Gallatin County 911, Gallatin Mobile Crisis, Bozeman Streets, and Gallatin County Attorney’s Office for their assistance during this tragic event.

He has been charged with Custodial Interference, Aggravated Sexual In*******se Without Consent, Aggravated Kidnapping, and Grooming of a Child. He is being held on a $750,000 bond.

“We want to acknowledge the great work that our patrol officers and detectives did in keeping members of our community and neighboring communities safe. We want to thank MSU Police for their assistance in resolving this case,” stated Bozeman Police Detective Captain Anthony Hutchings.

This week, we had 1395 calls for service, 101 cases opened and 253 Traffic Stops. On October 4th, a Bozeman Police Officer observed a vehicle making a turn at a high rate of speed, causing the tires to screech. The officer also noted the vehicle did not have a license plate and was not being operated in a careful manner. The officer turned on his lights and began a traffic stop. When the officer made contact with the driver, he noticed two b**r cans and an open bottle of boxed w**e on the passenger floor. The officer also observed the driver had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. The driver agreed to participate in the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, and it was determined they were unable to operate a motor vehicle. A check of the vehicle also showed it was not registered to operate on the roadway. The suspect was taken to the Gallatin County Detention Center where they submitted to a breath test utilizing the Intoxilyzer 9000. That test yielded a result of .207 BAC. The suspect was cited for Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Or Drugs – 1st Offense, Operating Without Liability Insurance in Effect – 4th or Subsequent, Careless Driving, and Operating a Vehicle Which Has Not Been Properly Registered.
