What is happening at the Gallatin County Courthouse?

The commission has been moving power from your elected officials to hired staff by resolution. Voters never approved it.

The Study Commission said the county has already migrated to a manager form. The commission says it has not, because no one held a vote.

If it walks like a duck, it is a duck.

Scott MacFarlane’s last day as Gallatin County commissioner was February 17.

Three days later, the county opened the Facilities Director job. Salary: $112,756 to $129,500. He got the job.

In 2025 that same position was posted at $87,000 to $102,000. Commissioners make $99,639.

The ad was on Ladders and county channels. It was not on Indeed or Monster.

According to Montana’s own Campaign Electronic Reporting System, that group took in $800,000 in a single month this summer — $550,000 from the Montana Values Action Fund and $250,000 from the Montana Constitution PAC, the trial lawyers’ political action committee.

Nobody spends money like that in a judge’s race for nothing. Money like that expects a return — and the return the trial lawyers want is a friendlier Supreme Court. What does it buy — influence, a friendly opinion, a seat on that Court?

When a mailer arrives screaming that a judge is “dangerous,” the first question a thoughtful voter should ask is simple: who paid for it, and why?
