The silent killer. Please read
đź«€ Atherosclerosis in Pet Birds: What Every Owner Should Know
Atherosclerosis is one of the most common—and most overlooked—conditions in companion parrots. It develops silently over time, often without obvious signs until the disease is advanced.
Who is at risk?
While any bird can be affected, species like African greys, Amazons, macaws, and cockatiels are more commonly impacted. Risk increases with age, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and long-term seed-based diets.
What should you watch for?
Signs can be subtle or sudden—loss of balance, weakness, breathing difficulty, or even collapse. Unfortunately, normal exams don’t always rule it out, making proper diagnostics critical.
Why nutrition matters
Diet plays a key role in prevention. Transitioning from seed-based diets to a complete, formulated diet is one of the most important long-term steps you can take. However, once disease is established, diet alone is not a cure—it’s part of a broader management approach.
The takeaway
Early awareness, proper diagnostics, and preventative nutrition are essential. This is a complex condition that behaves very differently in birds than in humans or dogs—and requires a tailored approach.
