Today, February 19th, is a very significant day. It is the first day of the Battle of Iwo Jima. In 1945, the Marines stormed the beaches of that tiny, but strategically crucial island to secure freedom for the Allies during WWII. Over 70,000 American Marines and Navy servicemen took part in the battle on that tiny 8 square mile volcanic island. Over 20,000 Americans were wounded and 6,821 Americans were killed. One of those killed was Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone, a Medal of Honor recipient for action seen during the battle of Guadalcanal in 1942/1943. He was only 28 and was part of the 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division. We honor Basilone today with this beautifully restored and copyrighted photo courtesy of the John Basilone Parade Committee.

Our Holiday message to all of you....

On February 19, 1945, the 3rd, 4th and 5th Marine Divisions were off the shores of Iwo Jima and preparing to go ashore, 79 years ago. Many were just teenagers and for some, this was their first battle. It was much worse than anyone predicted. One third of all Marines killed during WWII, were killed during the 36 days of this battle. Try to imagine what each one of these men were thinking and appreciate each day of Freedom you now have because of their service. Over the next 36 days, we will pay tribute to them by posting memories here and activities presented by Support Our Survivors of Iwo Jima , World War II Legacy Foundation, Inc. and the Iwo Jima/World War II Museum . Thank you all and please Thank A Veteran.
