Over the past few weeks, the Branford Fire Department conducted live burn training at the New Haven Fire Academy with both career and volunteer personnel.
This year’s theme, “Overcoming Obstacles,” challenged firefighters to work through common fireground obstacles built into the training by our Training Division. Some scenarios were inspired by challenges encountered at recent fires in Branford and surrounding communities, while others addressed issues commonly faced by fire departments nationwide.
The goal was to challenge our firefighters to think critically, adapt to changing conditions, and work together to overcome obstacles.
Every obstacle can be overcome with sound tactics, effective communication, and teamwork.

The Branford Fire Department is incredibly grateful for the support of our community and surrounding communities in helping us and the Guilford Fire Department maintain our specialized Rope Technician and Trench Technician skills.
We would like to extend a sincere thank-you to Stony Creek Quarry, who graciously allowed us to use their property for our Rope Technician refresher training earlier this year, and A&W Sanitation in Guilford, who provided us with the opportunity to dig trenches for our Trench Technician refresher training. These opportunities allow our members to train in realistic environments and maintain the skills necessary to respond safely and effectively to the unexpected emergencies that may arise.
Without the generosity and support of local businesses and community partners, this type of hands-on training would be much more difficult to accomplish. Their willingness to support our departments directly contributes to our readiness to serve and protect our communities.
We are also incredibly thankful for our longstanding partnership with the Guilford Fire Department. Over the years, this partnership has allowed us to develop and maintain multiple technician-level rescue teams, strengthen our capabilities, and provide mutual aid during larger, more complex incidents. By working and training together, we continue to build the teamwork, trust, and proficiency needed when our communities need us most.
Thank you to Stony Creek Quarry, A&W Sanitation, the Guilford Fire Department, and our entire community for your continued support. These partnerships make a meaningful difference in our ability to serve our communities and prepare for the unexpected

🚨 Today, Captain Spooner and EMT Stackpole represented the Branford Fire Department at the Branford High School Job Fair!

🚨 Students had the opportunity to learn more about careers in the fire and emergency medical services, while getting a firsthand look at some of the equipment and tools our members use every day.

🚨 Thank you to Branford High School for having us and giving us the opportunity to share what a career in the fire service and EMS has to offer. We always enjoy connecting with students and introducing the next generation to public safety careers! 🚒🚑

Readiness Condition: Monitoring

OVERVIEW

A POWERFUL NOR’EASTER IS EXPECTED TO BRING SOME IMPACTS TO OUR AREA STARTING TONIGHT AND LASTING INTO EARLY MONDAY…
Wind Advisories have been issued for the entire state starting at 2:00 PM this afternoon until early Sunday morning. Coastal Flood Warnings have been issued for Fairfield and New Haven Counties with Flood Advisories issued for coastal Middlesex and New London Counties from 6:00 PM this evening until 6:00 PM Sunday evening.
The most likely scenario for winds represented by the GFS model, indicates that northeast gusts of 45 – 55 mph will move into the state this afternoon and continue into Sunday morning. These winds combined with moderate rainfall and wet soil could cause a borderline minor to moderate power impact with widespread power outages along the coast and numerous power outages across inland areas. Even if peak wind gusts are not exceptionally high, the duration of the winds and vulnerability of fully foliated trees in saturated soils could make this a higher-impact tree damage event.
Based on the most likely track, the heaviest rainfall is currently expected to occur over Cape Cod and just south of Connecticut with 4” – 6 in those areas. In this scenario, Connecticut would receive 2”– 3.5 inches of rainfall. This rainfall is currently forecast to occur from tonight thru midnight to Monday and only cause very minor river or stream flooding.
Minor to moderate flooding is expected along the coast. Moderate flooding is expected along the coast of Fairfield and New Haven counties during three high tide cycles starting late Saturday morning, around midnight Saturday night and around noon on Sunday. The highest impact is expected on Sunday.
Please be prepared and take the following precautions:
• Pay attention to local weather forecasts and bulletins issued by the National Weather Service or local radio stations.
• If a road has flooded during past storms, assume it may flood again. Know another route. Leave yourself extra time. And most importantly: DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH FLOODWATER.
• For residents concerned with flooding, sand and sandbags are available at the Transfer Station located at 747 East Main Street. This is a self-service site, please bring your own shovel and gloves (Saturday, September 26, 2026 from 7:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.)
• To prepare for a possible power outage, make sure cell phone batteries are charged, gather supplies, and turn refrigerators and freezers to a colder setting.
• Bring inside loose, lightweight objects such as lawn furniture, patio umbrellas, potted plants, garbage cans, garden tools, and toys.
• Anchor objects that would be unsafe outside, such as gas grills or propane tanks.
• Secure boats with additional lines and/or consider moving your boat from moorings.
• If you see a downed power line, assume that all downed power lines are live, stay at least 30 to 35 feet away and immediately call 911.
• Stay clear of all fallen tree limbs and electrical wires as well as anything they are touching—such as puddles and metal fences.
• Do not drive across a downed power line. Treat all nonworking traffic lights as stop signs and proceed cautiously at intersections.
• If you have lost power, please report it directly to Eversource by calling 800-286-2000 or by using the following link: https://www.eversource.com/customercare/ReportOutage
• Prepare your home and family, review your emergency plans, test your generator and other similar activities. You can find additional information here:
o Ready.GOV- Emergency Kit
o American Red Cross Hurricane Prep
o Red Cross - How to Prepare for Emergencies
• Predetermine where you would evacuate if it should become necessary.
• Check on elderly neighbors or other vulnerable community members who may need assistance.
Our Department of Public Works and Police and Fire Departments are prepared and will continue coordinating as conditions develop.

In the midst of yesterday's torrential rains, Engine 9's crew assisted a stranded motorist who got stuck on the way to her daughter's wedding shower. The crew also rescued the flowers; all made it on time to the special event.

Congratulations to all! 💐💍🎊
