Symphiotrichum cordifolium, blue wood aster, is one of the last native species blooming each fall in our area, providing late season nectar and pollen for several bumble bees and sweat bees. It grows wild but can easily be grown from seed and added to your garden.

You can see in some of the photos how the disk florets at the center of each flower change color from pale yellow to a pinky-purple after they've been pollinated. The heart-shaped leaves give blue wood aster the second part of its scientific name - cordifolium.

Do you worry about what's happening to our beech trees? Maybe the high E.coli counts in our rivers and streams after heavy rain have you worrying about agricultural runoff? Do the bittersweet vines weighing down roadside trees make you mutter about invasive species?
What are your natural resources conservation concerns? Join Windham County Conservation District to chat at the Common from 2-5 pm on Friday, October 16!

The floodplain restoration at Kikitta Ahki has become an important part of Brattleboro's pollinator pathway by creating great habitat for a variety of insects.
Join the Caterpillar Lab and Brattleboro Conservation Commission on August 12 to learn about and document some of these cool insects!
Caterpillar Lab will bring some fascinating caterpillars, Conservation Commission members will bring field guides, and there will be activities for all ages.
You just have to bring your curiosity, your water bottle, and your phone if you want to add to iNaturalist documentation of the park's insects!

FIND AND MAP INVASIVES ON YOUR PROPERTY
Sunday, June 14, noon - 2:00 pm
Guilford, VT

Could you map the invasive species on your property without leaving the couch? WRWA is joining the Vermont Woodlands Association (VWA) in co-hosting a woods walk led by consulting forester (and WRWA President) Andrew Morrison, at a Tree Farm in Guilford, VT. We will learn to identify invasive species growing on the property including: Bittersweet, Buckthorn, Japanese Barberry, Autumn Olive and others. Following this walk you will be able to use your knowledge of what habitats New England's invasive plants love best, to simplify mapping their presence on your property. Then you can use these maps to generate a more effective plan to protect and restore your property's forest habitats.

We'll practice on an aerial map of the landowners property but if you're interested you can provide your address ahead of time and we'll work to get you an aerial map of your own property.
VWA is handling the registration for this free event. Pre-registration is required. The exact location will be shared with registered participants. Register at vermontwoodlands.org by navigating to the Upcoming Events page.

It's Day 4, the final day, of the Windham County City Nature Challenge and there's still time on this beautiful day to get out and make observations!
Just over a third of the 343 observations uploaded so far have been identified by a second iNaturalist user. If you want to help out with the identification to move as many observations as possible to Research Grade, you can do some ID work at home, or join a few of us in the Community Room at Brooks Memorial Library tomorrow evening (4/28), starting at 7 pm for a collaborative ID session!
