Gift-giving season will soon be upon us.

While it can seem easy to just pick someone up a bottle of alcohol, you may not know if that’s appropriate. Make your gift thoughtful and personal this year—and make it alcohol-free.

Know a wintertime runner? Get them a new water bottle. A cheese-head? Gift them some Vermont cheddar. A music fan? A vintage LP could make them smile.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, Oct. 24.

Take a few minutes to check your medicine cabinet for unused or expired medications. Safely disposing of medications can help prevent accidental poisoning and medication misuse and keep medications from getting into the wrong hands.

In the Brattleboro area, medications can be safely disposed of at these locations:

Brattleboro Memorial Hospital
17 Belmont Ave.
Secure MedDrop box in the main lobby entrance, available 24/7.

Brattleboro Police Department
62 Black Mountain Road
Secure prescription medication drop box available 24/7.

Kinney Drugs
500 Canal St., Unit 3
Medication disposal kiosk available during regular business hours.

Walgreens
476 Canal St.

Talk With Your Kids About Opioids

Young people may have access to prescription opioids through family members or friends, but taking medication prescribed for someone else can be dangerous.

Talking openly about prescription opioids can help young people understand why medications should only be taken as prescribed and why sharing medications is never safe. These conversations don’t have to be complicated. Start with the facts, listen to their questions and keep the conversation going.

SAMHSA’s Talk. They Hear You. campaign has resources to help parents and caregivers talk with young people about opioids and other drugs.

For adults who choose to use cannabis, knowing how to reduce risk matters. Starting with a small amount, waiting before taking more, and following recommended serving sizes can help prevent unwanted effects.

Cannabis products should always be stored securely and kept away from children and teens. Adults should never purchase or provide cannabis for anyone underage.

Making informed choices and keeping cannabis out of the hands of young people helps protect our whole community.

Spirit Day is not only a day to stand against bullying and show support for LGBTQ+ youth, it's also a reminder of the power of community.

When we create spaces where young people feel safe, supported, and valued for who they are, we help build a stronger and more connected community for everyone.

Everyday moments can be great opportunities to talk.

A car ride, running errands or time between activities can make conversations about alcohol and other drugs feel more natural. You don’t need a formal sit-down talk. Just start the conversation and keep it going.
