It's Banned Books Week! As the American Library Association puts it:

"The freedom to read is the freedom to learn. It is the freedom to view the world from other perspectives and to formulate understanding, opinions, and ideas of your own. It is the freedom to analyze and to question, to think critically and to make connections. It is the freedom to dream and to imagine. It is yours to exercise as you see fit.

Libraries ensure everyone in the country has the freedom to read. They are the part of our government that makes information and education accessible to all. Libraries and individuals' freedom to read have come under attack from those seeking to suppress access to ideas and viewpoints they disagree with. Whenever access to a library book is restricted based on someone's beliefs about its content, that is censorship and an abridgement of an entire community's freedom and rights."

Brooks is pleased to partner with our friends at Brattleboro Community TV for some exciting youth educational programming at BCTV! The amazing Keene State Professor Jo Dery will be leading a series of Saturday workshops for youth, aged 8-13.

Kids will experiment with animation, practice journalism techniques, and learn how to create public service announcements (PSA’s) about the causes they care about. Join for one or all of the workshops on October 24, November 14, and December 12 from 1-4pm. Brooks is happy to host a part of the Kid-Powered Journalism Workshop on 11/14 at the library.

Thanks to the kind sponsors, Vermont Country Deli and Longview Wealth Advisors, there are free and reduced rate sign-up options, so that this opportunity is open to all interested. Parents/guardians can sign their kid up for one, two or all three workshops on BCTV's website: https://www.brattleborotv.org/youth-workshops/ – or, scan the QR code.

SilverCircus is back - at the library, TOMORROW, October 3rd! It's happening on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays from 11 AM to 12 PM in the Community Room. Strengthen balance and build social connection, all while playing and connecting to your inner child.

These FREE circus classes are led by NECCA - New England Center for Circus Arts staff and are designed for older adults - all mobility and cognitive levels are welcome. It's a great opportunity to try this fun-filled class, before "joining the circus" or committing to classes at NECCA's trapezium across town. Hope you join us.
