Slash Pile Burning Planned in Summit County
Prescribed burn operations begin November 2026
Summit County, Colo. – Prescribed slash-pile burning operations are slated to begin next month at multiple sites throughout Summit County, including areas around Breckenridge, Blue River, Frisco, Silverthorne, Dillon and Keystone. Many of the towns around Summit County have multiple burn locations within and around them on assorted private, town, county or federal land.
Burn operations are expected to last one to three days at each location as the weather and conditions allow, but smoke may persist for multiple days. Please do not call 9-1-1 if you see smoke in the area of a designated prescribed burn. You can sign up for alerts related to prescribed burns at scalert.org.
Prescribed burns are conducted through partnerships with Summit County Open Space and Trails, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, Red White & Blue Fire Protection District, Summit Fire & EMS, the Towns of Breckenridge and Frisco, the Colorado State Forest Service, the U.S. Forest Service, the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) and private landowners.
Prescribed burns are a critical step in fuel-reduction projects throughout Summit County. Many of these projects were made possible by the Summit County Strong Future mill levy and the Summit County Wildfire Council.
Burning will be conducted under specific guidelines and plans established by DFPC and permitted by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. This includes having acceptable weather and fuel conditions to meet the objectives for safe and effective burning and adequate smoke dispersal.
Smoke from these prescribed fires may affect your health. For additional health-related information, visit CDPHE’s website on wood smoke or contact your doctor or health-care professional. Smoke-sensitive individuals can contact Jordan Mead at [email protected] for specific notification prior to burning operations on Summit County land or sign up for CDPHE’s smoke health alerts.
