Just in time for fall and spawning salmon, the Kitsap Conservation District removed the last private property fish barrier on Dickerson Creek, improving fish passage to 1 mile of salmon spawning and rearing habitat on one of Kitsap Counties' most productive salmon streams!
The previous culvert was undersized, causing a partial passage barrier to migrating salmon due to velocity during periods of high streamflow. The culvert was removed and replaced it with a 55-foot span steel bridge to correct the barrier. Species like Steelhead, Coho Salmon, Chum Salmon, and Coastal Cutthroat Trout now have access to an additional mile of high-quality habitat in the upper watershed. This project was funded by the Brian Abbott Fish Barrier Removal Board.
Many agencies have completed fish passage and restoration projects in the Chico watershed. Kitsap Public Works, Suquamish Tribe and Kitsap County. Collectively, we have made a difference!
