A huge thank you to all the hardworking volunteers who came out to help us plant in our founder plot last week!
Fall is the best time to plant natives, and at LINPI, we’re excited to be planting new species: Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis), Great blue lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica), and White avens (Geum canadense). We added three goldenrod species: Gray (Solidago nemoralis), Blue-stemmed (S. caesia) and Downy/hairy (S. puberula). And we added Coastal Joe Pye w**d (Eutrochium dubium), Purple wood aster (Eurybia spectabilis), and NY ironw**d (Veronia noveboracensis).
We plant a selection of plants grown from wild seed collected throughout Long Island with the goal of preserving the genetic diversity of wild populations and increasing the availability of these beautiful species.
Each fall, we harvest the seed from the plants in our founder plot, dry it in our hoop houses, and then clean it so it can be packaged and sold through the Northeast Seed Collective (go to linpi.org/seed for more info and to purchase seeds).
In addition to being essential to seed production, the founder plot provides important pollinator habitat adjacent to farmland 🐝🦋
