WVCEH operates the centralized intake line for the geography of the Balance of State, is a direct services provider of permanent housing, rapid rehousing, and homeless prevention efforts. Just because someone is outside doesn't mean they're experiencing homelessness. And just because someone is experiencing homelessness doesn't mean they owe us their story.

Those are just a couple of the important conversations we had in our latest episode of WVCEH Presents!

Host, Ashley, sat down with members of our HMIS team to talk about the upcoming 2027 Point-in-Time Count, covering the basics of what PIT is and why it matters, and discussing the human side of the count.

How do you approach someone respectfully? What happens when someone doesn't want to participate? How do we balance collecting accurate data with treating people with dignity? And what does volunteering actually look like, especially in rural communities?

We get into all of that, and more!

Whether you're a seasoned PIT volunteer or have never participated before, we hope this conversation gives you a little more insight into the work happening behind the numbers.

Last week, four members of the WVCEH team traveled to Baltimore, Maryland, to attend the Point Source Youth National Symposium on Solutions to End Youth Homelessness.

We're proud to recognize Kate and Erin, our Youth Housing Stabilization Case Managers serving the North Central and Mid-Ohio Valley regions, respectively, and Zoe and Amy, our Re-Entry Housing Navigators, who work with young people involved in the juvenile justice system.

These women work every day to help youths navigate challenging circumstances, overcome barriers, and move toward safe, stable housing. Their dedication extends beyond connecting people to resources, branching into the territory of ensuring that the young people they serve have someone in their corner.

One particularly powerful reflection from the symposium was the following sentiment:

“Resilience is a strange thing when a young person had no choice but to be resilient.”

It's a reminder that while we often celebrate resilience, we must also recognize the circumstances that require it. Young people deserve more than the ability to survive difficult situations. They deserve to thrive.

Throughout the symposium, our team heard directly from youth with lived experience, connected with fellow advocates from diverse communities, and explored new ideas for preventing and ending youth homelessness. They returned having made valuable connections, and with renewed motivation to strengthen the work happening right here in WV.

To Erin, Zoe, Kate, and Amy: thank you for the compassion, dedication, and the heart you bring to this work every day. We're incredibly proud to have you representing WVCEH, both here at home and on the national stage! 💜

Planning is officially underway for the 2027 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count!

Across the West Virginia Balance of State CoC, communities will come together during a single 24-hour period to help create a snapshot of sheltered and unsheltered homelessness across our 44 county coverage area. Over the next few months, we will be sharing more information about the PIT Count, and how you can get involved in your community.

Volunteer registration isn’t open just yet, but don’t worry. We’ll let you know when it is. For now, save the date and stay tuned. PIT 2027 is coming!

Save a Life Day is happening across West Virginia!

Here are just a few snapshots of WVCEH staff participating in events around the state today!

If you see a Save a Life Day tent in your community, pop in, say hello, and stock up on free naloxone and other resources.

Naloxone can reverse an opioid overdose, and having it on hand means being prepared when it matters most.

Carry naloxone. Know how to use it. You could save a life.

Can you help us?

One of our Case Managers in the North Central region is helping a program participant get settled into their new home, and there’s one item still on the wish list: a dresser!

We’re reaching out to our community to see if anyone has a gently used dresser in good condition that they would be willing to donate.

Have one you’d like to give? Please reach out so we can coordinate the details!

And even if you don’t have a dresser to spare, sharing this post can help us get the request in front of someone who does. ❤️
