I stopped fighting the spring garden center rush about twenty years ago. Everyone else is out there panic-buying in May, sweating in the heat, and wondering why their new plants are struggling by July. The actual secret to a garden that looks like you tried really hard? Do it on easy mode in October. The soil is still warm, the air is cool, and the plants have all winter to grow massive root systems. By the time spring rolls around, they just burst out of the ground. No fussing, no daily watering. Over the years, I’ve narrowed it down to 9 specific tough-as-nails perennials that thrive on neglect. You plant them now, go inside for some hot apple c***r, and let them do the work. If you want to know which scrappy plants made my list, I put them all together.
