October’s W**d of the Month is Poison hemlock.

This Colorado List C noxious w**d may resemble parsley or other harmless plants, but it is highly toxic to both humans and animals. Poison hemlock can often be identified by its fern-like leaves, clusters of small white flowers, and hollow stems with distinctive purple or reddish-purple spots.

Early identification and management before the plant produces seeds are important for limiting its spread. If you encounter a plant you suspect is Poison hemlock, avoid touching or disturbing it.

Follow along with our **dOfTheMonth series as we highlight species impacting our open spaces.

Congrats to Ranger Michael Schiel for winning one of two lifesaving awards at this year's Colorado Open Space Alliance Conference!

His quick thinking and life-saving skills made all the difference during a critical moment on the Clear Creek Trail. Over the summer, he was on routine patrol when he noticed an unconscious man. He immediately performed a rapid assessment and discovered no pulse, no breathing, pinpoint pupils, and cyanotic lips. Schiel directed the man’s friend to begin delivering rescue breaths and called for additional help to the scene while beginning chest compressions.

After the first round of CPR, Ranger Schiel delivered 4 mg of Narcan and attached his AED. He continued with five rounds of CPR before Adams County Fire units and deputies arrived. At this time, the man had regained a pulse and began breathing on his own. He was then transported by Adams County Fire where he was said to have made a full recovery.

We’re proud and fortunate to have dedicated individuals like Ranger Schiel on our team. πŸ‘πŸŒŸ

Mark your calendars for The Exchange, an evening of inspiring performances and deep conversations led by Adams County Poet Laureate Aerik Francis! The Exchange will explore the relationships between different art forms, including textiles, film, photography, and poetry.

Where do these art forms differ, and where do they share commonalities? How can we explore other art forms to dive more deeply into our own? All ages are welcome. The Exchange is free and open to the public.
