When we sat down with Chief MacAdam, one of the first things he shared was how honored he feels to lead more than 100 members of the Brighton Fire Department. As Fire Chief, he oversees the department’s overall operations, supported by a dedicated team of officers and members who work every day to make Brighton FD a great place to volunteer, work, and serve our community. “Together, we ensure the department is always ready to respond when someone needs help.”

“I like all the different parts of being a part of the fire department,” Chief MacAdam shared. “Going to fire calls, going to training, working with other fire departments. I like to be always learning and hearing about how we have helped people.”

One of Chief MacAdam’s favorite parts of the job is connecting with Brighton residents at community events. But here’s a fun fact you might not know: he’s often the person inside the Sparky the Firedog costume! So, if you’ve ever met Sparky at a local event, there’s a good chance you’ve met the Chief himself without even realizing it!

Originally from Nova Scotia, Chief MacAdam’s journey in the fire service began with his passion for scuba diving. He joined his local fire department because it had a dive team and served there for several years before moving to Washington, D.C., where he continued his firefighting career with another department.

Eventually, he made his way to Brighton, where he has proudly served as a member of the Brighton Fire Department for 26 years. Today, he is serving his second term as Fire Chief, bringing years of experience, a passion for learning, and a deep commitment to the department and the community it serves.

We’re proud to have Chief MacAdam leading Brighton FD and are grateful for the dedication he and all our members bring to serving our community!

Over the weekend, several BFD members participated in the 3rd Battalion’s vehicle extrication training. This hands-on drill provided an excellent opportunity to practice proper extrication techniques while prioritizing the safety of both vehicle occupants and emergency personnel. Thank you to MESFire for sponsoring this event and bringing the 3rd Battalion together for an educational day of training.

Firefighter Corinne McKnight has been a volunteer firefighter with the Brighton Fire Department since August 2025. As a volunteer, Corinne responds to calls from her personal vehicle, while spending a night at the station each week, or during ride time at the station.

Like most, Corinne most enjoys and appreciates the support she receives from her fellow firefighters. “They've been in my shoes learning new skills and it can be difficult, but everyone is so encouraging and wants to see you succeed!”

Corinne joined the BFD after attending its annual Female Firefighter Field Day, our free, hands-on recruitment and training event for women who want to learn what firefighting is like and explore becoming a volunteer firefighter. “I went to support my friends for fun …and ended up really enjoying what I was learning.”

Juan Cruz is an interior firefighter and the driver of 3027 for Tuesday Squad Nights. Firefighters who volunteer on Squad Nights follow a scheduled duty time model and are ideal when you live outside and prefer a set schedule. Juan is also serving as an advisor for the Brighton Explorers, where he enjoys mentoring and helping youth ages 14-18 learn about the fire service.

“What I love most about being a Brighton FD volunteer is showing up for people on one of the hardest days of their lives. We’re complete strangers, but for those moments we bring calm, do our job, and hopefully leave things a little better than when we arrived. Being able to do that alongside a crew I trust completely is what keeps me going and makes this job so rewarding.”

One of Juan’s favorite parts of being a firefighter isn’t the lights and sirens—it’s sitting down with his crew for dinner every night. “Those meals build the trust, friendships, and teamwork that carry over the moment the alarm sounds and we’re out for another call!”
