๐Ÿ“ฑ SCAM ALERT! ๐Ÿ’”

Looking for love online? Scammers may be looking for your money instead.

Romance scammers often create fake profiles, build trust, and develop emotional relationships with their victims. Once trust is established, they may ask for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or financial assistance.

๐Ÿšฉ RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR:
- They profess love very quickly.
- They always have an excuse for why they canโ€™t meet in person or video chat.
- They claim to have an emergency and urgently need money.
- They ask you to send gift cards, cryptocurrency, or money transfers.
- They pressure you to keep your relationship or financial requests a secret.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ PROTECT YOURSELF:
- Never send money to someone you havenโ€™t met in person, regardless of how well you think you know them.
- Be cautious about sharing personal or financial information.
- Reverse-image-search profile pictures and verify their identity.
- Talk to someone you trust if a relationship or request for money raises concerns.
- If you suspect a scam, stop communicating and report the profile.

REMEMBER: Scammers can be convincing, and anyone can become a victim. There is no shame in asking for help or reporting fraud.

If you believe youโ€™ve been targeted, contact the Brighton Police Department and report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission at https://ow.ly/Gr855100kJb. You can also report online romance scams to the FBIโ€™s Internet Crime Complaint Center at https://ow.ly/JWt65100kJe.

๐Ÿ’— WEAR PINK. SHARE HOPE. STAND TOGETHER. ๐Ÿ’—

This October, our officers are wearing pink badges in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

There is also one very special badge for Investigations Technician Paula Quynn, our resident warrior and Breast Cancer Survivor.

Behind every badge is a reminder that breast cancer touches so many lives. We wear pink to stand beside those courageously fighting, celebrate the strength of survivors, and remember those we have lost.

While a pink badge may be a small gesture, the message behind it is powerful: you are seen, you are supported, and you are never alone. ๐Ÿ’—

This month and every month, we stand together in the fight against breast cancer!

Weโ€™re With Survivors.

Behind every story is a person who deserves to be heard, believed, supported, and treated with dignity. This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we stand with survivors and reaffirm our commitment to building a community where everyone feels safe, supported, and valued.

Being with survivors means listening without judgment, offering support without pressure, and reminding them that they are not alone. It means creating a community that chooses compassion over silence and support over stigma.

Together, we can raise awareness, break the silence, and help end domestic violence.
We believe survivors. We support survivors. We stand with survivors.

๐Ÿ’œ Wear Purple. Show Support. Stand with Survivors. ๐Ÿ’œ

Today, we wear purple to honor survivors of domestic violence, remember those whose lives have been lost, and raise awareness about the impact of domestic violence in our community.
Wearing purple is more than a color โ€” itโ€™s a reminder that survivors are not alone, that support is available, and that we all have a role to play in creating a safer, healthier community.

Wear purple. Speak up. Support survivors. Help end domestic violence.

Together, we can show survivors that our community cares, our voices matter, and no one has to face domestic violence alone.

๐Ÿ’œ Community That Cares: a little kindness can make a big difference. ๐Ÿ’œ

Thank you to everyone who has donated hygiene items to support our community donation drive! Your generosity helps us show survivors of domestic violence that they are not alone.

โœจ Weโ€™re still collecting! Throughout October, weโ€™re accepting new, unused, and unscented hygiene items to help us assemble go-bags for survivors. Check out the graphic for a list of accepted items.

UPDATE: The suspect wanted in the shooting of a Thornton Police Officer has been arrested. Thank you to community in assisting Thornton in locating the suspect!

More details below.

NEWS RELEASE: Suspect in Thornton officer shooting arrested

Luis Arebalo, the suspect in the Oct. 11 shooting of a Thornton Police officer, is in custody.

On Oct. 13 at about 5:30 p.m., Thornton Police received multiple calls from community members reporting they had seen Arebalo walking near Riverdale Road and 120th Avenue. Officers responded, and Arebalo was taken into custody without incident. He did not have any apparent injuries at the time of his arrest.

Formal charges will be determined by the 17th Judicial District Attorneyโ€™s Office.

On Oct. 11, at about 9:30 p.m., Thornton Police officers responded to the 12800 block of Ulster Street. During the incident, Arebalo fired multiple rounds at officers, striking one officer. A second officer returned fire. Arebalo fled the scene.

In the hours after the shooting, SWAT, K9 teams and patrol officers searched the area within the perimeter, supported by drones, a Denver Police Department helicopter and a Colorado State Patrol airplane.

Over the next two days, investigators searched Arebaloโ€™s vehicle and the surrounding area, followed up on tips and worked with federal partners and neighboring jurisdictions to locate him. Arebaloโ€™s name and photo were released to the public, and Metro Denver Crime Stoppers offered a reward of up to $4,000 for information leading to him.

The injured officer has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

We are grateful to the residents who recognized Arebalo and called 911. Those calls led directly to a safe arrest. Thank you also to Metro Denver Crime Stoppers and everyone in the community who shared his information over the past two days.

We are proud of the officers who responded that night and remained diligent under extremely dangerous circumstances. We are also proud of the investigators who worked around the clock to bring this to a safe end. Our dispatchers also played a critical role, managing a high volume of emergency calls, coordinating resources and keeping officers informed throughout.

Thornton Police Department is especially grateful to the agencies that assisted with K9 and area searches, perimeter support, air and drone support, SWAT and crisis negotiation, and handling calls for service in Thornton during the incident:

Adams County Sheriffโ€™s Office
Arvada Police Department
Brighton Police Department
Broomfield Police Department
Colorado State Patrol
Commerce City Police Department
Denver Police Department
Federal Heights Police Department
Northglenn Police Department
RTD Transit Police
Westminster Police Department

This arrest is the result of our community and law enforcement working together, and we are grateful to everyone who played a part.
