Our TLC Coffee Shop was in action this past Thursday as students made drinks and practiced their skills at our district office, the Educational Service Center (ESC).

“Experiences like this give our students the opportunity to practice real-world skills, build confidence, and discover what they can accomplish. Every drink they make is another chance to learn, grow, and celebrate their independence," said Jennifer Rutherford, one of our TLC teachers.

The Transition Learning Center (TLC) supports young adults aged 18 to 21 with developmental disabilities as they prepare for life after high school, focusing on skills that build independence and prepare them for the workplace. We’re proud to see our students putting their skills into practice and gaining valuable experience for their futures!

Just one year after the district's first High School Adapted Track and Field Day and this popular event is expanding to two days to include middle school students!

These unique field days put our special education students in the spotlight and surround them with supportive peers. Organizers say the inclusion of middle school students this year is designed to introduce them to others they may see when they get to high school so they feel welcomed by a familiar face. The event also drives home an important message to student volunteers.

"The takeaway for the volunteers is that they have a new understanding of students abilities and not to get stuck on a student's disability. Every student is capable of participating when they are given the right tools," said Judith-Anne Madruga, Adapted Physical Education teacher for 27J Schools.

Congratulations to the Riverdale Ridge High School and Quist Middle School relay teams on winning the relay races! We also want to thank the student volunteers and Prairie View High School for hosting the field days.

When Cesar S. left the corporate world, he was looking for a change. Three years later, he’s still with us at 27J as a Bus Driver/Trainer and says he completely fell in love with his job.

For Cesar, the best part is the kids. He might start his morning route with sleepy elementary students, then turn up the music and get them laughing before they walk into school. In the afternoon, he gets a front row seat to whatever kind of day they had and tries to help them find their way back to a good mood. “It’s more gratifying,” Cesar says about making the move from the corporate world.

Cesar has one question for anyone who has been thinking about becoming a bus driver: “What’s taking you so long?” 💛 If you are looking for meaningful work that fits into your life and gives you the chance to make a difference every day, your next chapter may start behind the wheel.
