Time for another Aging Well Wednesday! And since it’s Falls Prevention Awareness Week, let’s talk about 5 steps you can take to prevent a fall.

💪 Find a good balance or exercise program.
Improving balance, strength, and flexibility can help keep you falls free.

🩺 Talk to your health care provider.
A fall is nothing to be embarrassed about. Having an empowered conversation with your doctor can help them help you avoid future falls.

💊 Review your medications.
Medication interactions can raise your risk of falling. Another reason to talk to your doctor!

👁️ Get your vision and hearing checked.
Vision and hearing play an important role in your balance – which you need to prevent falls during daily activities.

🏠 Keep your home safe.
Removing clutter and improving lighting are two small modifications that can help lower your chance of falling at home.

Thank you to our friends at the National Council on Aging for inspiring this list. Find lots more articles and resources on falls prevention on their website –https://www.ncoa.org/older-adults/health/prevention/falls-prevention/

🍁 It’s the first day of fall… and the first day of Falls Prevention Awareness Week!

Slips, trips, and falls can happen at any age, but they don’t have to be part of growing older. Falls Free CT is a statewide coalition with the mission to reduce preventable falls. Their newly-launched website features tons of great resources for both individuals and professionals on how to prevent falls.

Social connections are so important for our mental health – at every age. We loved reading this article in CT Insider about a group of Norwalk men in their 80s who have formed a friendship circle. Residents of Maplewood at Strawberry Hill, they call themselves the Strawberry Hill Gang!

Read it at https://www.ctinsider.com/living/article/norwalk-senior-men-friendship-22287711.php

A group of guys in their 80s started a random friendship group and now go on outings together. A story about the importance of socializing as we age.
