PUMP TESTING COMPLETED ON ALL THREE ENGINES!

Today, the Brodhead Fire Department completed annual pump testing on all three of our fire engines.

Pump testing is an important part of ensuring our apparatus is ready and reliable when our community needs us most. These tests evaluate the performance and capability of each engine’s pump, helping us identify any maintenance needs and confirm that our equipment is operating properly.

This testing is also required to help maintain our ISO rating, which reflects the department’s preparedness, equipment, training, and ability to provide effective fire protection to our community.

The Brodhead Fire Department chooses to utilize an outside testing company, F.A.S.T. LLC, to conduct this testing. Using an independent company provides an impartial assessment of our equipment and allows for an objective evaluation of performance and any maintenance needs.

A special thank-you to our dedicated volunteer firefighters who took time out of their day to assist with the testing process, including loading, unloading, setting up, and breaking down equipment. Their hard work and willingness to give their time help keep our department operating efficiently and our apparatus ready to respond. Our volunteers are the backbone of this department, and their dedication does not go unnoticed!

We would also like to thank F.A.S.T. LLC for their professional service and assistance in helping us maintain our operational readiness.

The Brodhead Fire Department was proud to participate in today’s Touch-A-Truck event at Mount Vernon Elementary School!

It was a great opportunity for children and families to get an up-close look at fire trucks, emergency vehicles, and heavy equipment while meeting some of the people who operate them every day.

We always enjoy getting out into our

A big thank-you to Mount Vernon Elementary School, the event organizers, all participating agencies and businesses, and everyone who came out to support this event!

❤️ The best part? Today’s event helped raise funds for Mount Vernon Elementary’s Inclusive Playground, a project that will benefit children and families throughout our community.

We’re grateful to have been part of it!

*Fire Prevention Week 2026 — October 4–10*

Charging your phone, tablet, game controller, laptop, or other battery-powered device on a bed, couch, recliner, or other soft surface can create a fire hazard.

Chargers and lithium-ion batteries produce heat while charging. Soft surfaces can trap that heat and block airflow around the device.

For safer charging:

- Charge devices on a hard, flat surface.
- Keep devices uncovered while charging.
- Do not charge under pillows, blankets, or cushions.
- Keep charging devices away from anything that can burn.
- Unplug devices when charging is complete.

*Soft surface? Hard pass.*

A small change in where you charge can make a big difference in preventing a fire.

*Fire Prevention Week 2026 — October 4–10*

If your phone, tablet, laptop, charger, or other battery-powered device feels unusually hot, **stop using it.**

Excessive heat can be a warning sign that a lithium-ion battery is damaged or beginning to fail.

Watch for these warning signs:

- The device or battery feels unusually hot.
- The battery begins to swell or change shape.
- You notice a strange odor.
- The device begins smoking, hissing, or popping.
- The battery or charger appears damaged.

If you notice any of these signs, unplug the device if it is safe to do so and move away from it. Do not continue charging or using a damaged battery.

**Feels hot? Stop using it.**

Small actions can have a big impact on preventing fires.

Readiness is key!

Following our regular business meeting last night, BFD members hit the bays to perform comprehensive checks on all our trucks and equipment. From inspecting the apparatus to running the saws, we make sure everything is 100% ready to go at a moment's notice when our community needs us.

🚒 **Brush Fire Response**

Today, Brodhead Fire Department responded to a reported brush fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found a large outdoor burn in violation of Kentucky’s seasonal burning restrictions. The fire had spread into a nearby woodline.

BFD crews contained the escaped fire and took additional steps to prevent further spread. The contractor was advised of the burning restrictions. Due to the size of the remaining burn, it was agreed that it would be allowed to burn down under continued monitoring. The contractor is remaining on-site with equipment and a water source to help prevent any additional spread.

The contractor plans to resume burning after 6 p.m., subject to all applicable burning regulations and restrictions.

**BFD appreciates the contractor’s cooperation and assistance in helping our crews contain the fire.**

🔥 **Please remember:** Kentucky’s fall fire hazard season is in effect statewide from **October 1 through December 15**. Under **KRS 149.400**, setting fires in or within **150 feet of woodland or brushland is prohibited between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.**, except when the ground is covered with snow.

Burning after 6 p.m. must still comply with other open-burning laws and any local burn bans. Always monitor your fire, keep water and equipment available, and never leave it unattended.

*Fire Prevention Week 2026 — October 4–10*

A cheap or damaged charger isn’t worth the risk.

Lithium-ion batteries depend on the correct charger to safely control the amount of power going into the device. Using an off-brand, counterfeit, damaged, or incompatible charger can cause the battery to overheat, fail, or potentially start a fire.

A few simple reminders:

- Use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
- Replace cords that are frayed, cracked, loose, or damaged.
- Never continue using a charger that becomes unusually hot.
- Make sure the charger is designed for your specific device.
- Avoid extremely cheap or unverified replacement chargers.

Saving a few dollars on the wrong charger can create a much bigger problem.

*Cheap charger? Don’t chance it.*
