With freezing temperatures expected over the next couple of weeks, producers grazing livestock on sorghum and related species should move animals to a safe alternative forage source before frost occurs.
Frost-damaged sorghum may accumulate toxic levels of prussic acid, which can result in rapid poisoning and death. Risk is greatest immediately following a frost event. Wait 7 to 10 days or longer after a frost before grazing.
Plan ahead by monitoring weather forecasts and removing livestock before freezing temperatures arrive.
As the first frost date approaches, producers often have concerns about the risk of prussic acid poisoning in livestock. Certain forage plants, especially sorghums and related species are associated with an increased risk of death loss because of prussic acid poisoning.
