On Saturday, the Brooklin Fire Department recognized six members whose response was essential to saving the life of a visitor to Brooklin who suffered a massive heart attack last spring. Fire Chief Sam Friend, along with Assistant Chief Josh Gray and EMS Chief Rob Groesbeck presented special pins to Firefighters/EMTs Francis Meisenbach and Griffin Stevens and Lieutenant Frank John, also EMS Assistant Chief and EMT. (Sean Guinness, a fourth department firefighter, who also answered the call, was unable to attend the ceremony.) The four personnel sustained the unconscious victim, steadily maintaining chest compressions, repeatedly using an AED to shock his heart back into action and keeping his airway clear until an ambulance from Peninsula Ambulance Corps arrived with advanced equipment. Additionally recognized were Assistant Chief Tommy Morris and Rob Shillady, the department’s safety officer, who controlled traffic at the scene so the EMTs could work uninterrupted. Also invited to the ceremony was Michael Gorman, director of the Wooden Boat School, who first administered aid to the victim and began chest compression under the direction of a 911 dispatcher at the Regional Communications Center. Members of the Town Board Stacia Nevin and Nick Carter attended and Nevin officially thanked the Brooklin Fire Department for its service to the town.
