REMEMBERING D-DAY
Today, we pause to reflect and remember the anniversary of . Thousands fought for our freedom on this day, many making the ultimate sacrifice.
D-Day was the codename for the Allied invasion of Normandy, France on June 6, 1944 during World War II. It marked the beginning of the campaign to liberate northwestern Europe from N**i German occupation.
On D-Day, over 150,000 American, British, and Canadian troops landed on the beaches of Normandy in one of the largest amphibious military operations in history.
Despite facing fierce German resistance, the Allied troops were able to gain a foothold in Normandy and begin the liberation of German-occupied France.
The D-Day invasion was an incredibly risky yet vital operation, requiring extensive planning and coordination. Its success allowed the Allies to establish a foothold in Europe and eventually push eastward into Germany, ultimately leading to the defeat of N**i Germany and the end of World War II in Europe in 1945.
D-Day is considered one of the most significant victories of World War II and a turning point in the war against N**i Germany. It is commemorated annually on June 6th to honor the bravery and sacrifices of the Allied troops who took part in the Normandy landings.

Happy National Donut Day!
National Donut Day is celebrated each year on the first Friday of June. To celebrate this years donut day, we wanted to explain the the longstanding connection between police officers and donuts.
This association has its roots in practical reasons dating back to the 1950s:
1. Late-night availability: Police officers working night shifts had limited options for food and coffee. Donut shops were often the only establishments open 24 hours.
2. Convenient pit stops: Donut shops provided a place for officers to take breaks, use restrooms, and fill out paperwork.
3. Social hub: These shops became informal gathering spots for officers to exchange information and socialize.
Over time, this practical relationship evolved into a stereotype, often used in popular culture and media. While some officers embrace the association humorously, others view it as an outdated cliché.
Today, with changing dietary habits and increased health awareness among the profession, the connection between cops and donuts has become nothing more than folklore. However, it remains a recognizable part of American cultural comedy.
So while you're enjoying a donut this year on National Donut Day, remember cops love donuts more than you do!

DROUGHT ADVISORY
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows that Eastern Massachusetts remains in a Severe Drought (D2) despite the rainfall received over the weekend.
Dry conditions continue to increase the risk of mulch, brush, and grass fires, which can spread quickly and threaten nearby structures. Residents are encouraged to exercise caution when disposing of smoking materials, using outdoor equipment that may create sparks, and maintaining landscaping around their homes.
During drought conditions, residents can take several simple steps to reduce the risk of fires around their homes and neighborhoods:
Maintain Defensible Space
* Remove dead leaves, pine needles, and dry vegetation from around your home.
* Keep grass mowed and clear away brush and weeds.
* Trim tree branches that hang over roofs or are close to structures.
Be Careful with Mulch
* Keep mulch beds moist when possible.
* Avoid discarding ci******es in mulch, as mulch fires can smolder unnoticed before spreading.
* Consider using less combustible landscaping materials near buildings.
Use Outdoor Equipment Safely
* Avoid operating lawnmowers, chainsaws, or other equipment on extremely dry days if they could create sparks.
* Never park vehicles on dry grass, as hot exhaust systems can ignite vegetation.
Dispose of Smoking Materials Properly
* Fully extinguish ci******es and ci**rs before disposal.
* Never throw smoking materials from a vehicle window.
Prepare Your Home
* Keep gutters free of dry leaves and debris.
* Ensure fire hydrants near your property remain accessible.
* Have a garden hose available and ready for use.
Conserve Water Responsibly
* Water lawns and landscaping according to local guidance.
* Prioritize watering trees, shrubs, and plants closest to your home, which can help reduce fire spread.
Even a small spark can start a fire during drought conditions. Taking a few preventive measures now can help protect your home, your neighbors, and first responders.
To report a fire or smoke condition, including mulch fires which are common in dry conditions, contact the Brookline Fire Department immediately.

SAVE THE DATE!
Join BPD June 30th, 2026 from 2-6pm at PSB Food Service's SUMMER EATS Kickoff Event!
Nutritious free meals are available for children and teens 18 and younger at 575 Brookline Ave (Lynch Rec Center) throughout the summer while school is out of session.
Good nutrition is essential for learning in school. Continuing healthy eating habits is also important during the long hot summer months. Eating nutritious foods helps ensure students retain their hard learned knowledge… and to help them to keep right on learning throughout the summer.
For many of these children, summer vacation can bring the temptation of eating empty calorie snacks and foods that are high in sugar, fats and sodium. And for many others, summer exposes students to an increased risk of hunger and developmental decline. Make seasonal fruits and vegetables a high priority for your snacks, meals and anytime.
Summertime is a time to play hard...but it is also a time to remember to eat right. Make sure good nutrition remains a priority all summer long, and students will return to school in the Fall healthy, sharp and ready to learn.

BPD celebrates World Bicycle Day!
Today we celebrate one of the best ways to get around our beautiful town.
Whether you're commuting on Beacon St, cruising through Coolidge Corner, or hitting the paths around Leverett Pond, cycling is great for your health, your wallet, and our community.
As you ride, remember to keep everyone safe:
Always wear a helmet — it's the law for riders under 17
Obey traffic signals and stop signs — cyclists follow the same rules as drivers
Use lights front and rear when riding at dawn, dusk, or night
Yield to pedestrians — especially in crosswalks and on shared paths
Lock your bike — even for a quick stop
From all of us at BPD ride safe, ride smart, and enjoy the journey. 🌳
