Supporting individuals with disabilities since 1983 in home-ownership settings in Massachusetts and Maine. FMI: www.specializedhousing.org

You can give your family member the dream of independence with the necessary supports. We help families create independent living situations for adults with developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, traumatic brain injuries and physical disabilities. We gather a team of clinicians, lawyers, architects, and builders committed to the creation of housing for people with additional needs. Home ownership for permanence, independence, dignity, and control:
Specialized Housing was the very first housing program in the United States to help adults with special needs to own their own homes with professional support. Group homes and rental units may be subject to the whims of landlords or changes in public policy, but property ownership contributes to individual growth, self-esteem, responsible citizenship, community involvement, and a sense of security for residents and their families.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to recognize the skills, talents, and contributions of workers with disabilities.

This year’s theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” is a reminder that inclusive workplaces create opportunities for people to contribute their skills, pursue their goals, and be valued for the work they do.

At SHI, we’re proud to celebrate the house members who work throughout our communities and the employers who help make those opportunities possible.

Here’s to recognizing talent, opening doors, and making inclusion part of the workplace every day.

Fall has arrived, and our homes are as lively as ever. Across our houses, house members are heading to bowling leagues, Best Buddies, recreational programs, day programs, and jobs, then coming home to cook, share dinner, and catch up with the people they live with.

Find out what’s going on at Specialized Housing this fall by clicking the link in our bio.

🐘 Some of our Brookline community recently visited The Great Elephant Migration on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall in Back Bay!

This free outdoor exhibit features 100 life-size elephant sculptures, hand-carved from invasive lantana camara root by over 300 Indigenous artisans from India’s Nilgiri Hills. It’s on view through September 13, so there’s still time to see it!

Sun’s out, grills out! SHI house members came together this Memorial Day for a outdoor cookout, sharing a meal and a moment to just be outside, together, in the sunshine. This is community.
