If Kamala Harris wins in November, America wouldn’t just see its first Black woman and South Asian American president — but also the nation’s first Native American woman governor.

Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, would ascend to the state’s top executive role if Gov. Tim Walz — announced Tuesday as Harris’ running mate — becomes the VP. It would make her the state’s first woman governor and the first Native American woman in the country to hold the role.
