June marks the annual celebration of Caribbean Heritage Month. As an extremely proud child of Jamaican and Bajan immigrants, I’m keenly aware of the importance of celebrating the contributions of Caribbean Americans.

Generations of Caribbean immigrants came to this nation to work as domestics, teachers and Pullman porters; so that their children would have the opportunity to rise to the highest heights; from Shirley Chisholm to Una Clarke to Kamala Harris, the contributions have been enormous.

These are the shoulders that we stand on and as we move from strength to strength, will pass on to the next generation. I look forward to celebrating Caribbean heritage with my fellow New Yorkers.

Today we mark the beginning of Gun Violence Awareness Month. Each year we use this time to raise public awareness about the epidemic of gun violence in our society and to remember those we have lost to it. As co- chair of the NYS Assembly’s Anti-Gun Violence Subcommittee , I pledge to continuing to raise my voice on this issue. This week I will join with my colleagues to host an Advocacy Day in Albany on Wednesday and join with my community to lead a march in Brooklyn on Saturday.
