Back in the Spring of 2012, the Friends of Dome Playground was working to make Dome Playground the center of Kensington, Bklyn cultural activities--unique at the time. Long before Dome was renovated we produced the Stargazer night, music program, and the Alpona drawing workshop for Bangladeshi New Years, with the help of our friends: Annie Ferdous of Bangladesh Institute of Performing Arts (BIPA) and Jill Reinier of The Singing Winds, with support from CMember Brad Lander, who was wowed by the star gazing event, which was led by Joe Delfausse.

At Avenue C Plaza, Sat April 13, noon to 6 pm
Celebrate Bengali New Year 1426 called "Poehla Boshakh"
Here's a chance to diversify your cultural tastes in multicultural Kensington. A 6 yr-old Kensington tradition, this year's celebration of Bengali New Year will offer face painting, a magic show, art workshops et al for kids; and for the adults, dance and live music performances at 2 pm by the Bangladesh institute of Performing Arts (BIPA) and South Asian Cultural Collective (SACC). At 4:30 pm Fogo Azul NY, the all-women's marching band, will lead a police-escorted parade around the neighborhood, with Kensington locals carrying masks on sticks displaying tiger, owl, peacock, elephant, and large human faces.
These masks are a traditional part of Boishakh in Bangladesh. Those at this Saturday's festivities were made locally by The Singing Winds and BIPA students at PS 230 and PS 179 workshops.
Last year a decorated rickshaw arrived offering free rides to all. A big hit, it will return this Saturday.
The event is produced and directed by Annie Ferdous, dancer and choreographer, BIPA director and Kensington resident, with her partner, Jill Reinier, storyteller, The Singing Winds' project director and parent coordinator at PS 230.
Y'all come. It should be lots of fun. Wear red & white.
