NYC Democratic Socialists of America The New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America. If you want to build a better world with us, join us: socialists.nyc

The NYC Democratic Socialists of America is the New York City local of Democratic Socialists of America, the largest socialist organization in the United States with about 70,000 members (as of June 2020). NYC-DSA is run by its 5,500+ members and activists who are working together to build a democratic socialist organization throughout the five boroughs. We are socialists because we share a vision of a humane social order based on popular control of resources and production, economic planning, equitable distribution, feminism, racial equality, and non-oppressive relationships. We are socialists because we are opposed to an economy organized for private profit that produces gross inequalities of wealth and power, discrimination based on race and s*x, and brutality and violence in defense of the status quo. We are socialists because we want to work together to develop a concrete strategy for achieving that vision, for achieving a transition to democratic socialism in America. We believe that such a strategy must acknowledge the class structure of American society and that this class structure means that there is a basic conflict of interest between those sectors with enormous economic power and the vast majority of the population. And we believe that only democratic movements and socialist parties can lead the way to a better world.

Why are everyday New Yorkers paying for AI Data Centers? This Thursday, October 15, join DSA members across New York State as we call Hochul and tell her: We don’t want to pay for AI data centers! Use the link in our bio to join our statewide phone blitz this Thursday and help us keep the phones ringing in Albany all day long.

New Yorkers already pay the third-highest energy bills in the country- we shouldn’t also foot the bill for new AI Data Centers that take our jobs and pollute our communities. The Responsible Data Center Development Act prevents AI Data Center developers from passing their costs onto the public, and includes renewable energy goals, prevailing wage requirements, and a mandatory hearing at host communities before a data center comes to town. Let’s come together as New Yorkers and tell Hochul: Sign the Responsible Data Center Development Act!

Speaker Menin, which side are you on?

Last week Claire Valdez kicked off our canvass in Speaker Julie Menin’s district. More than 100 of us knocked 2,500 doors to talk with her constituents about the Delivery Protection Act. 91% said they support the DPA!

The bill would make Amazon directly employ the drivers who deliver its packages, giving them real power to hold Amazon accountable. A supermajority of councilmembers have signed on. All it needs now is a vote, and the Speaker decides whether that happens.

Amazon has spent $8 million lobbying to stop it, but we have the people.

Speaker Menin, is it Amazon or the workers? Let the DPA get a vote.

Join us again Saturday, October 17 at noon in Menin’s district. dsa.nyc/DPAsignup

“A child in Palestine is no less precious than my own child.”

In our latest piece for The Palestine Connection, we interviewed New York State Assemblymember Diana Moreno, the new lead sponsor of the Not On Our Dime! Act, to discuss the historic legislation, what’s at stake, and what comes next.

New Yorkers have made it clear: they want their tax dollars invested in faster public transportation and affordable childcare, not in the displacement of Palestinians from their homes.

The Act—first introduced in the New York State Assembly by now-Mayor Zohran Mamdani and in the State Senate by Senator Jabari Brisport in May 2023—ensures that organizations funding illegal war crimes or genocide cannot register as charities and receive tax subsides from New York State.

It also takes an unprecedented step to hold these institutions accountable for their complicity in Israel’s crimes by empowering Palestinians harmed by violence funded by New York-based charities to file lawsuits.

As the January 2027 legislative session approaches, Moreno made clear that the future of this bill depends on all of us. From pressuring elected officials to co sponsor, to joining the coalition, to rejecting AIPAC interference in elections, the public pressure we build is what makes our demands impossible to ignore.

🥶FREEZE THE RENT🥶
We’re rallying with the tenant movement on Thurs 5/7 at 5 pm outside the Rent Guidelines Board meeting where they’ll lay out the proposals for next year’s rent. We demand a RENT FREEZE for 1- and 2-year leases—and only massive organized pressure can stop Big Real Estate’s attacks on our popular agenda.

BREAKING: JPMorgan warns that NYC’s credit could be downgraded if we don’t tax the rich.

When even the big banks say tax the rich, it just shows how extreme Hochul’s austerity crusade is.

Kathy Hochul is so blinded by the interests of a handful of rich donors that she can’t see she’s putting the city and state’s economic future in jeopardy.

Join us on Weds for a huge canvass to tax the rich and save our city. Link in bio.

Governor Hochul’s budget would be terrible for New York City.

Over a million people voted for Zohran’s affordability agenda. Hochul wants to crush it by imposing austerity on NYC.

If she doesn’t tax the rich and fund our city, she’ll force NYC to cut the programs and services we rely on.

Here’s what $5 billion in cuts could look like.

Join us for a big canvass to show Hochul we’re fighting to win the affordable city we voted for. Link in bio.

Only an organized working class can defeat the federal assaults on immigrants, unjustifiable wars, and Amazon’s exploitation. A working class movement elected and we continue to fight for the passage of New York for All, Dignity Not Detention, and a state budget that taxes millionaires and corporations, putting the profits of stolen labor back into the public good, not US imperialism.

Because as says, “workers deserve it all.”
