Advocating Historic Preservation for East New York and Cypress Hills.

Abo So, only imagine what can happen?

As we know, sections of East New York and Cypress Hills will be highly affected by the rezoning proposed in the East New York Community Plan. Many of us have been concerned with the proposal and are highly focused on mainly addressing baseline issues such as affordable housing, displacement, job opportunities and services. However, amidst these critical concerns, we also have to think about how ph

Today's weather reminded us of a few weekends ago when we walked the streets of East New York during a walking tour in partnership with the Center for Brooklyn History, the East New York Archives, and the East New York Community Land Trust. We are still feeling the excitement from that day. We were very appreciative of the large, engaged group that showed up despite the rainy weather. We even had a clown in the crowd. Did you spot them?

We were excited to introduce a new route to the public, including a visit to one of the neighborhood's many community gardens. Did you know that the neighborhood with the highest number of community gardens is East New York? (Boom!) The tour concluded at the Euclid Avenue station, where we viewed the Memory Matters Pop-Up Museum created by the East New York Community Land Trust, the East Brooklyn Archives, and the Center for Brooklyn History. So next time, be sure to get off the C train and check it out at the Euclid Avenue station!

Wayback Wednesday takes us back to this past spring, when we had the opportunity to guide this year's youth cohort on a walking tour of East New York. During this experience, the youth explored the vibrant history and architecture of the neighborhood and also delved into the complex narrative of gentrification that has significantly impacted our community. Touring with the youth is a highlight for us as we witness their curiosity and enthusiasm, and we also learn how they connect with their community.

Remembering the inspiring final projects from the 2025 Spring semester of these brilliant architecture students from studio at the CUNY Spitzer School of Architecture, who reimagined a new life for the East New York LIRR Substation. Among the exciting proposals were diverse ideas such as a brewery, an urban agriculture and hydroponic center, a wellness center, a bathhouse, a recycling and exchange center, and a music venue. They left us very inspired, eager to witness the potential transformation of the substation in the near future.

Reflecting on our event last Sunday, we truly enjoyed the engaging activities crafted by the talented CUNY students from the Spitzer School of Architecture. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of play and community participation as we envision a vibrant future for the abandoned East New York Long Island Railroad Substation.

In many marginalized communities, designs often emerge in their final forms without the valuable input of those who live there. We believe that if a space is meant for us, it should be shaped by us—just like the spirit behind FUBU, remember? "For Us, By Us." Our community engagement event was not just an event. It was an act of design justice, allowing us to gather narratives and stories that can help breathe new life into the long abandoned Substation. Participatory design, built from the ground up, empowers the community, giving a voice to the people.

On this day, ten years ago, February 11, 2015, a Brownstoner article highlighted the impending demolition of our beloved East New York Savings Bank building. The unfortunate news resonated deeply within our community, inspiring us to come together and take action like the protest led by Council Member Chris Banks to save the building. This moment became a powerful catalyst for change, inspiring the formation of Preserving East New York (PENY) as a testament to our commitment to safeguarding the heritage and identity of our beloved neighborhood.

As we commemorate ten years of advocacy, let us celebrate the progress we’ve made together with our community, allies, partners, and supporters as we continue to celebrate and preserve our history and culture.
