Yesterday’s New York State EMS Memorial Dedication Ceremony in Albany honored fallen EMS professionals, including six FDNY EMS members. Among them was Paramedic Salih Abdur-Rahman, who died in the line of duty in October 2025, along with five members who died from World Trade Center-related illnesses.

Their names now join the heroes memorialized on the state’s “Tree of Life” monument, ensuring their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

I spoke with some of these young people and their ideas, energy, and honesty about the future are very encouraging.

There’s a real opportunity to connect technology and energy in smarter, more meaningful ways and they’re already thinking in that direction.

More power to these young voices who are shaping what comes next.

2026 NY Senate District 17 Woman of Distinction recipient Marina Cassiliano, is not receiving this recognition because she wanted it. Marina did not think of this award when she helped our community with decades of selfless dedication. Marina is not receiving this recognition because she asked for it. This award was the last thing on her mind as she stood by our community, sacrificing her time and strength to do her part in helping others.
She is our Woman of Distinction because she deserves it!
And I know, that tomorrow, she’ll go right back to doing what she’s been doing all along. Bringing help, togetherness, compassion, and sacrifice to our community, without any regrets, without any asks, without the expectation of thanks. She’s Marina!
