Happy ! 🦇Meet the African straw-colored fruit bats at the Prospect Park Zoo. They get their name from the distinctive yellowish or straw-colored fur around their necks and collars.

While most bat species use echolocation (bouncing sound off objects to navigate), African straw-colored fruit bats rely on their strong sense of smell and sight to find food instead.

These bats are considered important gardeners of the forest! As they feed on fruit and nectar, they spread seeds and pollinate plants across long distances, helping forests grow and regenerate.

Come see them in the Hall of Animals.

Keeper Gwen has a special treat for the black swans and muntjac! The black swans are enjoying a head of lettuce, and for the muntjac she has added some trail mix between the layers of lettuce. This enrichment encourages natural feeding behavior, and offers valuable mental stimulation.

Did you know dwarf mongooses and hornbills have a remarkable partnership in the wild? While mongooses dig for insects and other prey, hornbills catch anything that escapes. In return, the birds act as lookout guards, warning the mongooses of nearby predators with alarm calls.

A true win-win in the wild, proving that teamwork isn't just for humans!
