Happy World Sea Lion Day! Sea lions are highly intelligent, social, and playful. They are the only animals found at all five of our WCS parks: the Prospect Park Zoo, Bronx Zoo, New York Aquarium, Queens Zoo, and the Central Park Zoo. Join us for daily training sessions on weekdays at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and 11:30 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. on weekends and holidays to learn more about these charismatic mammals.

Happy World Turtle Day! The Rote Island snake-necked turtle is native to Rote Island in East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. It has not been seen in the wild there for more than a decade. This species is one of the 25 most threatened freshwater turtles in the world and is listed as āCritically Endangeredā on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Since 2015, the Bronx Zoo has shipped 46 turtles back to Indonesia in one of the first repatriation efforts of its kind. Prospect Park Zoo currently displays one of these turtles in the Hall of Animals.
š Sound on for pudu eating crunchy vegetables ASMR! A typical breakfast for pudu at the Prospect Park Zoo consists of specialized grain pellets, yams, carrots, mixed greens, and apples. As one of the world's smallest deer species, pudus don't need a large quantity of food. They forage for leaves, shrubs, fruits, and other vegetation. Because they eat a wide variety of high-water-content plant matter, they can go for long periods without drinking water.

In this , watch our male and female North American river otters foraging for fish using a puzzle feeder set up by Keeper Gwen.
The puzzle feeder is made up of three cups attached around a central rod so the otters have to lift the upper cups to access the lower feeders. In their natural range, river otters use their paws to move stones or reach between rocks to capture their prey. This enrichment encourages natural behaviors, provides practice in object manipulation, and offers valuable mental stimulation.

Happy ! This week we shine a spotlight on some of the most important and underappreciated animals on the planetāfrogs, toads, newts, and salamanders.
Did you know amphibians consume enormous amounts of mosquitoes and other disease-carrying insects? Without them, insect pest populations would likely skyrocket, posing real threats to humans, livestock, and plants alike.
Despite all they do for us and our ecosystems, amphibians are among the most threatened animals on Earth. This week is a great reminder of why protecting these incredible creatures and their habitats is so important.

If you have a cat at home, this scene is probably familiar! Just like domestic cats, scratching is a natural behavior for sand cats. In their natural desert habitat, sand cats use their claws to dig in the sand, climb, and catch prey.
