06/01 My staff member Alex proudly represented me at the 2026 New York State Seal of Biliteracy Convocation, a celebration recognizing thousands of New York City students who have demonstrated proficiency in multiple languages and a commitment to academic excellence.
This year’s ceremony highlighted the incredible linguistic diversity of our city. It was shared that the students represented in the room collectively spoke approximately 75% of the world’s languages, a powerful reminder of the cultural richness found throughout our schools and communities. More than 1,100 students and families attended the event, representing a significant portion of the nearly 3,000 students who earned the Seal of Biliteracy this year.
The program featured inspiring student speakers, performances by talented student musicians, dancers, and vocalists, as well as remarks from education leaders and advocates who emphasized the importance of multilingualism in an increasingly interconnected world.
I congratulate all of the students who earned this distinguished recognition. Your dedication to mastering multiple languages is an extraordinary achievement that reflects not only academic excellence, but also the diversity, cultural understanding, and global perspective that help make New York City so unique.
