In Black History Month, we would like to share powerful stories to highlight the history of affordable housing activism in Brooklyn, one that is especially connected to the movement that helped create organizations like Neighborhood Housing Services of Brooklyn ~

Women who were on the front lines of the fight for fair housing in Brooklyn.

In Frontline Highlight:

Dorothy Mae Richardson (1930–1995) was a Black housing justice pioneer and founder of Neighborhood Housing Services of America, beginning in Chicago in the late 1960s.

She:
- Led one of the earliest successful anti-redlining campaigns in the U.S.
- Pioneered the NHS model itself: block-by-block - reinvestment, home repair, and fair lending partnerships
- Directly influenced the national expansion of NHS organizations, including those that later formed in New York City and Brooklyn.

While her work was Chicago-based, her model is the blueprint that NHS Brooklyn operates from.
