Shops on both sides. People walking, shopping, going about their lives. Fifth Avenue is a neighborhood street. It should be safe to walk here.

In Crashscape, each cube represents a recorded crash. Walking through them makes familiar streets look different. Cellie Muschamp’s death at Fifth Avenue and Union Street should have been a warning.

Crashscape is part of the CrashCount app. My painting for Cellie is part of The Distance From Here, opening October 17 at littlefield, 635 Sackett Street, Brooklyn, as part of Arts Gowanus Open Studios.

What would make Fifth Avenue and Union Street safer? Returning to Cellie Muschamp’s corner with my painting, I found myself thinking about how we divide up the street—and what protected bike lanes could make possible.

The Distance From Here brings painting and crash histories into a conversation about the places we share. A memorial can be a beginning, not an ending.

Opening October 17 at littlefield, 635 Sackett Street, Brooklyn, as part of Arts Gowanus Open Studios.

After Cellie Muschamp’s death, neighbors gathered to mourn her. Council Member Shahana Hanif wrote that crossing the street should not be a matter of life and death and called for changes to street design.

How do we keep paying attention after the headlines fade? My painting for Cellie is part of The Distance From Here: an effort to keep real people and their corners present, and to keep asking for safer streets.

I came to Fifth Avenue and Union Street to make a memorial for Cellie Muschamp. Standing there with the painting, watching the traffic, I felt angry too. Remembering someone should also mean asking what would make this corner safer.

This is part of The Distance From Here, my project connecting paintings and real crash histories with the places we pass every day.

Opening October 17 at littlefield, 635 Sackett Street, Brooklyn, as part of Arts Gowanus Open Studios.

Four handmade paintings are the starting point. Touch the map, discover paintings based on nearby crashes, and explore the stories behind them. The projected images draw on the visual language of my original paintings.

Here is how The Distance From Here works. Opening October 17 at littlefield, 635 Sackett Street, Brooklyn, as part of Arts Gowanus Open Studios.
