🌊 Learning Together. Preparing Together.

Today, we joined our friends at Pasco County Emergency Management for a live demonstration of flood control systems!

πŸ’ͺ From temporary flood barriers to water diversion solutions, it was a great opportunity to see these technologies in action and learn more about available flood protection and mitigation tools.

πŸ’™ Our Pasco EM partners also treated us to a personalized tour of the Fasano Regional Special Needs Shelter, sharing valuable insight into their sheltering operations.

A big thank you to Pasco EM for their hospitality! Sharing knowledge, strengthening partnerships, and learning from one another make our region better prepared.

🏑 Speaking of special needs sheltering, are you or someone you care for registered?

Hernando County's Special Needs Registry helps us plan for residents who may need additional assistance during emergencies.

🌦️ When Every Minute Counts, Communication Matters.

Yesterday, we joined our friends at US National Weather Service Tampa Bay Florida, media, and emergency management partners from across the region for the Tampa Bay Integrated Warning Team (IWT) meeting!

πŸŒͺ️ We discussed how El NiΓ±o weather patterns can increase Florida's potential for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and heavy rainfall during winter and spring, and explored new Flood Inundation Mapping (FIM) tools to better understand and communicate flood risks.

Why does this matter? Because an accurate forecast is only part of the equation. The communication, coordination, and collaboration behind the scenes help turn forecasts into timely warnings and informed decisions that keep our communities safe.

We're proud to represent Hernando County and grateful for the partnerships that make this possible! πŸ’™

🏑 Your part matters, too! Know how you'll receive weather alerts, have a family emergency plan, and remember that flooding isn't just a coastal concern.

πŸ”” Stay informed. Get prepared. Visit HernandoCounty.us/EM to sign up for Alert Hernando.

What a great way to spend the morning! πŸš’ ❀️

There's something pretty special about being surrounded by people who care deeply about what they do, the teams they lead, and the community we're all proud to serve.

A big thank you to Chief Hasenmeier and our friends at Hernando County Fire Rescue for inviting Emergency Management to join today's professional development training! Great conversations, valuable lessons, and a few important reminders that leadership isn't just about the title you hold. It's about how you show up, lead by example, and support those around you.

We're grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow alongside such dedicated professionals. Proud to be part of this team and even prouder to serve our community together!

🌊 COASTAL FLOODING REMINDER | HERNANDO COUNTY πŸŒ€

As we head into the overnight hours, we're reminding our coastal residents to keep a close eye on water levels.

Hernando County remains under a Coastal Flood Advisory until 8 AM Saturday, and that advisory could be extended depending on conditions.

While Hurricane Isaias is well outside our area, its influence on coastal water levels, combined with elevated astronomical tides, could lead to minor coastal flooding.

⏰ **Two periods we're watching closely:**
- **Overnight tonight into early Saturday morning**
- **Saturday afternoon's high tide**

If you live in Hernando Beach, Weeki Wachee Gardens, Aripeka, Pine Island, or another low-lying coastal community, please pay extra attention to changing conditions. Roads, yards, and properties that routinely experience tidal flooding may be especially vulnerable.

πŸš— Turn Around, Don't Drown! Never drive through flooded roadways. Water may be deeper than it looks, and conditions can change quickly.

πŸ“² Are you registered for Alert Hernando? It's our county's emergency notification system, used to share important information about severe weather, flooding, evacuations, and other emergencies. Registration is free, and you can choose how you'd like to receive notifications, including phone calls, text messages, and emails.

πŸ‘‰ Sign up or update your contact information: https://AlertHernando.org

🌊 Check local high and low tide predictions from NOAA: https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/noaatidepredictions.html?id=8727151

A little preparation and extra attention tonight can make a big difference. Stay informed, look out for one another, and please stay safe out there, Hernando! ❀️

Reminder: As Hernando County prepares for minor coastal flooding, sandbags will be available at Linda Pedersen Park in Spring Hill on Friday, October 9 from 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM.

πŸ“Linda Pedersen Park
6300 Shoal Line Boulevard, Spring Hill, FL 34609

Tips for Properly Filling and Stacking Sandbags:
πŸ”Ή Fill sandbags halfway to two-thirds full. Overfilling can make them less effective.
πŸ”Ή Stack sandbags in a staggered pattern to avoid gaps between seams.
πŸ”Ή Tuck the open ends underneath each bag to help create a stronger barrier.
πŸ”Ή Remember, sandbags can help redirect shallow floodwater, but they do not guarantee protection against flooding.

πŸͺ& don't forget to bring your own shovel!

As hurricane season continues, make sure to review these flood safety and preparedness tips to help protect your property.

πŸŒ§οΈπŸŒ€ Evening weather update, Hernando!

Our soggy stretch continues, with additional showers and thunderstorms expected through the weekend. With already wet conditions, watch for ponding on roads and localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas.

πŸŒ€ Tropical Storm Isaias continues to strengthen in the Gulf and is forecast to become a hurricane Thursday before moving toward the northern Gulf Coast Friday night into Saturday.

We are not currently expecting tropical storm or hurricane-force winds in Hernando County. Our primary concern from Isaias is the potential for minor coastal flooding, with water levels of 1–3 feet above ground level possible along the coast Friday into Saturday, particularly around high tide.

🌊 Coastal residents can monitor local water levels and tide predictions through NOAA Tides & Currents:

For now: awareness, not alarm. Keep an eye on the forecast and make sure you have multiple ways to receive updates.
