Chances are you’ve met our next fella from another catipilla’…the butterfly!
The RGV are a host to close to 300 species of butterflies, with about a third of them specifically calling Resaca de la Palma home. Butterflies come in a host of colors, sizes and shapes just like moths. One of the main ways you can tell the difference is by looking at their antennae. If it has a rounded club at the end of them, then it’s a butterfly. Moths have either a fuzzy, comb-like antennae if it’s a male, or a thin and tapered antennae if it’s a female.
Butterflies have been a big help in bringing the conservation of pollinators into the limelight. They pollinate a host of plants during the day, but in order to attract and keep them in your garden, you not only need nectar plants (their adult food source), but you also need host plants (the caterpillars food source). By having both, you can raise butterflies, and moths, in your own garden!
