Buried in the Nettle Lake Cemetery on County Road 5-75 is the Welch Family. James H. Welch of Maryland was born in 1824 and moved to Pennsylvania at an adult age. He first married Catharine Eskes in the 1840s and then moved to Northwest Township, Williams County in the 1850s to farm. At the turn of the Civil War, he enlisted with Company C, 2nd Missouri Cavalry Regiment which was also known as “Merrill’s Horse” after Captain Lewis Merrill. While serving, his wife Catharine died in 1862 at the age of 42. Following his discharge, he married Anna Riley and went on to have 4 children living in Hillsdale County, Michigan. James died in 1896 at the age of 71 and Anna followed in 1898 also at the age of 71. James, along with his two wives, are buried in the Nettle Lake Cemetery. Near the top of their gravestone is inscribed “Mansions” which might suggest the manufacturer of this stone.

C.1975 - Source: The Bryan Times
The third annual Jaycee’s Haunted House event was open 16 nights, took 24 men to operate, charged $1 admission and entertained thousands of people eager for Halloween thrills in 1975. Instead of a single structure, that year the haunted house was actually two houses connected by a 30 foot cable bridge by the Bryan High School on Central Drive. The “haunted” houses cost about $1,000 of new materials and more than 1,000 man-hours to complete the elaborate walk-through. The event boasted 14-16 new scenes, each one designed to scare or amuse visitors. The scene shown here, was inspired by the 1975 blockbuster movie Jaws.

from the LHC Huffman Photographic Archives: Henry and Anna Howell – Lick Creek Cemetery
Buried in Lick Creek Cemetery at the corner of County Road G and 12 are Henry and Anna (Fanning) Howell. Henry and Anna, both of New York, were united in marriage in 1811. They first moved to Portage County, Ohio for a short period of time and ultimately settled in Williams County in 1848. Research shows they never had any children during their 51 years of marriage. After living a quite life of farming in Center Township, Henry died in 1862 at the age of 72 years old. Anna died in 1869 at the age of 78 years old. The couple are buried in fenced-in enclosure at the Lick Creek Cemetery. Their burial plot stands to be one of the few fenced-in plots in the county.
