Kratom products are becoming increasingly popular, and young people can easily buy them at gas stations and smoke shops. Here’s what parents should know about kratom:

⚠️ Acts like an opioid at high doses and a stimulant at low doses.
👎Can cause severe withdrawal symptoms and serious health issues, including seizures, liver injury and substance use disorder.
🚫 Can be especially dangerous when mixed with alcohol or other drugs.
🏥 Has been linked to increased hospitalizations in Berrien County.

Principal Mike Babcock running around on this sunny day with his students at Moccasin Elementary sounds like an absolute classic recess moment.

It says a lot about a principal when the kids naturally swarm him the second he stops running. Sounds like he's a huge hit on the playground—even if he needed a quick rescue team at the end! 🦌

Buchanan Community Schools is participating in Operation Safe Stop. We are sending a zero-tolerance message to the public: illegally passing a school bus on America’s roadways will result in a ticket. www.michigan.gov/SchoolBusSafety

• Operation Safe Stop, a statewide law enforcement initiative targeting illegal passing of stopped school buses, is conducted each year during National School Bus Safety Week. Police agencies work with local school districts to enforce and educate drivers about the rules while driving near a school bus. Help keep students safe!

• During a one-day survey conducted by 1,738 Michigan school bus drivers in May of 2026, drivers reported 950 incidents where a motorist passed a school bus illegally.

• School buses are the safest way for children to get to school. Their design is meant to be safer than any passenger vehicle in avoiding crashes and preventing injuries. Treat the flashing lights of a school bus like a traffic signal.

• Drivers who pass stopped school buses may be charged with civil infractions carrying a fine up to $500.

• In Michigan in 2025, there were 1,189 crashes involving school buses, 82 of those happened at bus stops. Of the 82 bus stop crashes, there were no fatalities; however, there were 35 injuries. If the bus lights are flashing red – STOP!

• In Michigan in 2025, October was the month with the most school bus-related crashes (157). That is why Operation Safe Stop is out all week – helping keep students safe on their way to and from school.

• School bus-involved crashes increased 12% from 2024 (1,044) to 2025 (1,189). Help us decrease crashes.

• In a normal year, 500,000 buses nationwide take 26 million students to and from school each day. School + field trips + sports and more means buses log 10 billion miles traveled every year. See the red flashing lights of a bus? Stop!

Friday morning was full of fun and learning at Ottawa Elementary! Kindergarteners spent time with members of the Buchanan Township Fire Department, Buchanan City Fire Department, Bertrand Township Fire Department, and Buchanan Police Department to learn all about fire safety.

Thank you to all of our local first responders for visiting our students and helping keep our community safe! 🚒🚑👮‍♂️✨🦌
