Sadly, car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens. Too many California drivers ages 15–19 are involved in fatal and injury crashes every year.
If you have a Provisional License (under age18), first-year restrictions include:
🚫 No driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless supervised
🚫 No passengers under age 20 unless supervised
🚫 No cell phone use — including hands-free

Exceptions exist for work, school, medical needs, and certain family situations (documentation is required).

Parents and teens: Know the rules, avoid distractions, and make safe choices. Want to learn more? Download the app or contact your local CHP office and ask to find out more about an upcoming Start Smart Program!

It was a privilege to stand with all who attended the 9/11 remembrance ceremony in Santa Barbara this morning. We honored the memory of innocent lives lost, the families affected, and the incredible courage shown by the first responders who ran toward danger on this day, and in the aftermath, 25 years ago. Their sacrifice remains a guiding light to our mission to provide the highest level of safety, service, and security to all in California.

Caveat emptor is Latin for "let the buyer beware," meaning the buyer takes the risk as it relates to the private party purchase of goods or property. In this case, let's examine private party auto-sales, our victim has purchased a Honda SUV.

In the following photos (1-6) there are some discrepancies for a perspective buyer to note:

1.) Good example of a factory installed vehicle identification number (VIN). Many Honda models will have the associated QR code visible. If scanned, the QR should display the VIN number.
2.) Beware. The QR code is not visible unless at an extreme angle and the overall placement is off.
3.) Good example of a factory installed label which contains the VIN number.
4.) Beware. Note the right corner of the sticker is bent/peeling. That is an indicator of tampering.
5.) Good example of factory installed informational stickers on the driver side door frame.
6.) Not a bad job by the crooks replicating the sticker placement. It is hard to see, but the middle sticker has a small gauge near the bottom. Not necessarily a red flag, but in that location on a newer vehicle, not common.

Recommendations: Don't be blinded to red flags by deals that are too good to be true and don't be pressured by the seller. If you can find a similar vehicle to the one you are interested in purchasing, take a look at the VIN number and sticker placement beforehand. Manufacturers are pretty consistent in their application of such things. Scan the QR code on your smart phone, make sure the numbers match. Do what you can to be informed and not be victimized.

Our investigation is ongoing. The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security to the public.
