Our local senior centers have proven to be a popular gathering spot for older generations. If there’s a way for me to add to that environment, I know the investment will be put to good use.

That’s why I was pleased to see all the improvements that were recently completed at the Alden Senior Center with funding I was able to secure.

Today we remember the great explorer and navigator, Christopher Columbus, whose epic voyages initiated European settlement in the Americas and inspired centuries of exploration.

This Columbus Day weekend, licensed hunters aged 12-13 may hunt big game in Erie County for the first time as part of the DEC’s Youth Hunt program!

I was happy to be the lead sponsor of the law that permits our youth to hunt deer when accompanied by a supervising adult.

This is a great opportunity for supervising adults to mentor their youth hunter and enjoy quality time outdoors together.

I was proud to be a sponsor of and support the legislation that provides a 100 percent real property tax exemption on the primary residence of seriously disabled veterans. That determination of being 100 percent disabled rests with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. But these men and women who have served, and are now 100 percent disabled as a result of a debilitating injury suffered in service to our country, are deserving of this exemption. Their sacrifices have resulted in lifelong disabilities. We are a grateful nation, and this exemption was absolutely necessary.

This October, we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

We devote this month to everyone who has ever been affected by breast cancer. It is our hope to raise awareness of this disease and encourage women to take proactive steps toward prevention and early detection. Every woman deserves comfort as she takes the brave step of getting screened.

We extend our compassion to all those affected by breast cancer, and we pray for them, as well as the medical professionals who work to provide treatment and ultimately find a cure.

$510,000 for a park shelter!?

This past summer, County Executive Mark Poloncarz cut the ribbon on Shelter 14 in Como Lake Park.

Immediately I was concerned about the amount spent, then I started hearing from residents who shared those concerns. I went to the site with trade specialists and my staff to conduct a thorough evaluation, and we found it hard to believe that this simple park shelter cost so much money.

Today I had the great pleasure of naming Stephanie Speaker as the Erie County Citizen of the Month for the month of September, 2026. For anyone who has not had the pleasure, Stephanie is a self advocate who is constantly campaigning for the disabled community with great results. She’s had multiple bills passed at the state level and whenever she’s not advocating she’s volunteering with Meals on Wheels, American Red Cross and others. She is the epitome of selflessness and it is my honor to be able to recognize her.

The outdoor fitness court has been a valuable addition to Firemen’s Park in the Village of Depew, NY.

It gives residents a place to train that is different from conventional fitness centers by being connected to nature, sunlight, and fresh air. This is a perfect place to meet up with friends and get your steps in or improve your strength.

I was happy to get behind this project, and I will continue to invest in spaces that support both the mental and physical health of our community.

Happy National Hunting and Fishing Day!

This year is especially meaningful as we welcome a new generation of Erie County hunters following the recent enactment of a local law authorizing youth hunting with adult supervision.

It is important that we protect and cherish these traditions that bring us together outdoors.

Thank you to the Erie County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs for all the work you do to advocate for hunting and fishing, and to preserve our heritage for future generations.
