🔥🔥🔥 Fire Prevention Week is here! 🔥🔥🔥

Buffalo Illinois Fire Protection District, Dawson Fire Protection District and Mechanicsburg Fire & EMS had a great time hosting a fire prevention day at Tri-City Elementary School! The students, ranging from Pre-K through 5th grade, learned all about Stop, Drop and Roll, fire extinguishers, SCBAs, turnout gear, explored the fire trucks and was able to get some nozzle time!

Huge thank you to the students and staff at the school for having us come out! We had a fun filled day with everyone, and hope you learned a few things this year! 🚒🔥🧯

Yesterday, September 22nd, 2026, at 1616, Buffalo Illinois Fire Protection District and Dawson Fire Protection District units were dispatched to I-72 westbound at mile marker 111 for a multi vehicle accident. Buffalo and Dawson units arrived on scene to find heavy traffic backed up approximately 1/2 mile and climbing. Once reaching the accident, units found a wrecked vehicle in the median, facing west near the westbound lanes. Approximately 20 yards away, a semi tractor with a tanker trailer was found wrecked in the median, facing southeast near the eastbound lanes. On the northside of the westbound lanes, a work truck was found on the shoulder.

Much debris was spread throughout the roadway in the westbound lanes, causing both westbound lanes to be at a stand still. All vehicles involved in the accident had one occupant per vehicle. All occupants were self extricated and transported to local hospitals by three different ambulances from Medics First.

The semi tractor carrying a tanker trailer was confirmed by Buffalo and Dawson units to be empty, but was actively spilling diesel fuel from the fuel tank. Fire units on scene quickly spread oil dry and dammed the spill. Debris was quickly removed from the right westbound lane to get traffic slowly flowing again. Once able to, all debris from the roadway in all lanes was cleared and all lanes were able to be opened back up for traffic.

Illinois State Police was active on scene with fire and EMS. Shaner's Towing was on scene for towing purposes as well.

Major thank you to the following agencies on scene for their assistance:

Dawson Fire Protection Department
Buffalo Fire Protection District
Illinois State Police
Medics First of Springfield Illinois
Sangamon County Central Dispatch System / 9-1-1
Shaner's Towing

🇺🇸 Remembering September 11, 2001 - 25 Years Later 🇺🇸

Twenty-five years later, we pause to remember the lives forever changed by the events of September 11, 2001.

We honor the innocent lives lost, the brave firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and other first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice, and the countless families and communities who continue to carry their memories.

World Trade Center: 2,753
The Pentagon: 184
Flight 93: 40

Within those numbers:

Firefighters: 343
EMT/Paramedics: 8
Port Authority Police Department: 37
NYPD: 23
New York City Fire Patrol: 1

Bringing the total loss on that day to 2,977 innocent, brave souls. This number does not include the individuals who have suffered and passed due to the horrific events that day.

As firefighters, we understand the courage, sacrifice, and commitment it takes to run toward danger when others are running away. The courage displayed that day will never be forgotten.

We Remember. We Honor. We Will Never Forget.

With deepest respect and remembrance,

The Members of the Buffalo Fire Protection District 🇺🇲
