For more than 175 years, Forest Lawn in Buffalo, NY has remained an active cemetery, offering available space at our historic flagship location and 13 additional sites across Western New York. As one of the first deliberately designed and professionally landscaped rural cemeteries in the United States, Forest Lawn is at the heart of Western New York’s cultural tourism renaissance. Its first interment took place in 1850; today there are 162,000+ permanent residents in this 269-acre, nonsectarian, not-for-profit cemetery. Forest Lawn offers year-round guided tours, educational programming, an annual flag retirement ceremony, special veteran programming; it is truly a destination for art, history, genealogy and so much more. Forest Lawn is the only local full-service cemetery for traditional and cremation arrangements listed on the State and National Registries of Historic Places.

Did you know some trees smell like cotton candy in the fall?

The Katsura tree is one of them. As its heart-shaped leaves turn golden yellow and begin to fall, they release a sweet fragrance often compared to caramel or cotton candy. Thanks to the knowledge and care of our arborist, Forest Lawn’s Level II accredited arboretum is home to remarkable trees like this one, each adding to the beauty and character of our historic landscape.

You may know Hayes Hall at UB, but do you know the man behind the name?

Edmund B. Hayes was an MIT-trained engineer who partnered with his brother-in-law, George Field, to build bridges, including a railroad bridge across the Niagara River. He later went into business with John J. Albright, investing in the Buffalo Bolt Company and Ontario Power Company.

Hayes and his wife were also generous supporters of Buffalo's hospitals, arts, and education. Their philanthropy helped make Hayes Hall at University at Buffalo South Campus possible.

Hayes died on October 19, 1923, and is laid to rest in Section 8 at Forest Lawn.

Breaking from traditional memorial architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright created a space that feels like a natural part of its surroundings.

With the changing leaves, open sky and peaceful pond, his vision of bringing architecture and nature together at the Blue Sky Mausoleum is especially striking this time of year.
