In 2021, a devastating EF4 tornado tore through the city of Mayfield, Kentucky.

Many of the city's downtown buildings were heavily damaged, including the historic St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, which suffered a collapsed roof and two severely damaged walls.

With help from the Kentucky Heritage Council - SHPO, the church received the first Rapid Response Emergency grant from the Preserving Black Churches (PBC) program, created by the National Trust’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, with leadership support from Lilly Endowment Inc.

A group of national experts advised on ways to mitigate future extreme weather and climate change impacts on this small but mighty church.

Today, St. James AME Church Mayfield, KY remains one of the few historic resources actively being preserved in Mayfield, making it a symbol of resilience and hope for the entire city.

Adoptable Pet of the Week: Sweetie 04/25/2023

Adoptable Pet of the Week: Sweetie This friendly girl is winning over hearts at the Burbank Animal Shelter with her soft eyes and goofy smile (check out those dimples!). Sweetie has enjoyed the company of everyone she's met, including other dogs (a meet and greet play-date is a must if you currently own one), though the shelter doesn...

Racer and Honey just hit ONE YEAR at the Shelter waiting for their forever home.

This bonded pair are here to prove mutts make the best pups! They have a little Cattle Dog, Pointer, maybe a dash of Pit Bull and Dalmatian in them.

They both found themselves relinquished to the Shelter after their owner sadly passed away. Honey absolutely loves Racer and loves to watch over him. Racer is a tripod, missing his left rear leg, but we think it just helps him run a little faster (less weight to carry). You wouldn't know he's missing a leg when you see him play and frolic with his friend Honey.
She and Racer both love human affection and do well meeting new people.

Honey and Racer share everything from a bed, bowls, toys, and affection. They are both very loving dogs and if you sit in with them, they will gladly cover you in kisses in exchange for belly rubs and ear scratches. They need an adopter willing to commit to them for the years that they have left. They don't need a huge yard, but they will definitely need something that they can run around in. They need an adult only home with no other pets.

Make you appointment to meet this pair with the biggest hearts. Must be adopted together! Adoption fees for Honey and Racer are 50% off!
