🌧️ THANK YOU FOR THE RAIN, BUT LET’S STAY SAFE, BURKBURNETT! 🚔

First and foremost, thank You, Lord, for the rain! 💙 We are thankful for the much-needed rain and know our community has been waiting for it. However, with the heavy downpours we received last night and we’re experiencing today, we want to remind everyone to take extra precautions while traveling.

🚗 RAINY WEATHER SAFETY TIPS FROM YOUR BURKBURNETT POLICE DEPARTMENT:

🌧️ Slow down! Wet roads can become slippery quickly, and hydroplaning can happen when your tires lose contact with the road.

💡 Turn on your headlights so you can see better and other drivers can see you.

↔️ Increase your following distance. Give yourself extra room to stop, and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns.

🌊 Turn around, don’t drown! Never drive through flooded roadways. You cannot always tell how deep the water is or whether the road beneath it is damaged. Find another route!

🚧 Watch for water across the roadway. Some areas may flood more quickly than others, especially low-lying roads and areas with poor drainage.

📱 Stay focused. Put your phone down, stay alert, and watch for other drivers and pedestrians.

⛈️ If the rain becomes too heavy to see clearly, find a safe place to pull over away from flooded areas and wait for conditions to improve.

Rainfall amounts can vary throughout our community. Some areas may have received several inches of rain while others have received much less. Please don’t assume a road is safe just because another area hasn’t experienced flooding.

💙 We are grateful for the rain, but nothing is more important than the safety of our community. Please look out for yourselves, your loved ones, and your neighbors.

From all of us at the Burkburnett Police Department, drive carefully, make safe decisions, and have a wonderful Thursday!

🌧️ Be thankful. Be alert. Be safe.

🚨 SCAM ALERT: Beware of Fake Law Enforcement Calls 🚨

The Burkburnett Police Department wants to make our community aware of a scam that has recently targeted several area residents.

Individuals claiming to be a member of the Wichita County Sheriff's Office, identifying themselves as "Captain Gunn," are calling residents and falsely stating that there is a warrant for their arrest. The caller then demands money to avoid being arrested and instructs victims to withdraw cash and deposit it into a cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) kiosk or send funds to a Bitcoin wallet.

This is a scam.

🔹 Law enforcement agencies do not call people and demand money to clear warrants, pay bonds, avoid arrest, or resolve court-related matters.

🔹 Law enforcement agencies do not require payment through Bitcoin, cryptocurrency kiosks, gift cards, wire transfers, or payment apps.

🔹 Scammers can "spoof" phone numbers, making it appear that the call is coming from a legitimate local number, including numbers with a 940 area code. Caller ID cannot always be trusted.

The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reports that scammers frequently impersonate law enforcement officers and government officials, using threats of arrest, missed jury duty, or warrants to pressure victims into making immediate payments through cryptocurrency kiosks and other untraceable methods.

The Federal Trade Commission also warns that real law enforcement officers will never call, text, or email you demanding payment to avoid arrest, and courts do not collect fines over the phone using cryptocurrency.

✅ If you receive a similar call: • Hang up immediately.
• Do not send money or provide personal information.
• Do not follow instructions to visit a Bitcoin kiosk or ATM.
• Contact the law enforcement agency directly using a published phone number to verify any claim.
• Report the incident to your local law enforcement agency.

📢 Please share this post with family, friends, and neighbors, especially older adults who are often targeted by these scams.

If you have questions or believe you may have been targeted, contact the Burkburnett Police Department at (940) 569-2231.
